From slashdot : "With the recent discussion of the ISS having to dodge some space junk, many people's attention has once again focused on the amount of stuff in orbit around our planet. What many people don't know is that USSTRATCOM tracks and publishes a list of over 13,000 objects that they currently monitor, including active/retired satellites and debris. This data is meaningless to most people, but thanks to Analytical Graphics, it has now been made accessible free of charge to anyone with a copy of Google Earth. By grabbing the KMZ, you can not only view all objects tracked in real-time, but you can also click on them to get more information on the specific satellite, including viewing it's orbit trajectory. It's an excellent educational tool for the space-curious. Disclaimer: I not only work for Analytical Graphics, but I'm the one that wrote this tool as a demo."

GeoEye-1 Exclusivity Deal with Google

Last week the geoblogs mentioned the important exclusivity deal between Google and GeoEye (GeoEye is Space Imaging and OrbImage together, since early 2006). Why important? Because Google already has an exclusivity deal with DigitalGlobe which can cause difficulties to casual buyers. The GEB has a nice summary: "Not only that, as part of the deal, Google's logo is being flown on the side of the rocket. The new satellite is capable of up to .41 meter resolution, but by [U.S.] law Google will be limited to .5 meter/pixel resolution. This is still VERY good resolution, and a bit better than DigitalGlobe's typical .6 meter imagery." APB also offers coverage. The EOPortal informs us on GeoEye-1, to be launched later this week: "[...] the satellite will make 15 earth orbits per day and collect imagery with its ITT-built imaging system that can distinguish objects on the Earth's surface as small as 0.41-meters (16 inches) in size in the panchromatic (black and white) mode. The 4,300-pound satellite will also be able to collect multispectral or color imagery at 1.65-meter ground resolution. While the satellite will be able to collect imagery at 0.41-meters, GeoEye's operating license from NOAA requires re-sampling the imagery to half-meter resolution for all customers not explicitly granted a waiver by the U.S. Government." Quake located with webserver

SEWilco writes "All Points Blog points out that European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) researchers have found they can locate an earthquake based upon the location of people visiting the EMSC web site. A lack of Internet visitors also can be used to imply that a region has been damaged. As humans are the detectors, the method is limited to quakes which humans notice."

From the Space Mart news web site: "...the UM satellite sensor, a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), works far better than other types of remote sensing technology for broad-scaled ecological studies. It is very difficult to study bird breeding habitat over large area from ground surveys, as birds are so mobile. Ocean Topography Satellite Launches Soon

The Spatial Sustain blog brings us news about this upcoming satellite launch. From their summary : "The Jason-2 satellite, also known as the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM), is set to launch June 15 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. GeoEye Scheduled to Launch Next-Generation Earth Imaging Satellite August 22, 2008

Dulles,VA-- GeoEye, Inc. (Nasdaq: GEOY), a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, announced an August 22, 2008 launch date for its next-generation, earth imaging satellite GeoEye-1. Boeing Launch Services and GeoEye finalized this launch date in an amendment to the Launch Service Agreement that was signed on May 7, 2008. The International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" founded by the European Space Agency has been activated for the heavy flooding in Fredericton (Canada) and the Cyclone Nargis in Yangon (Myanmar). Images are available for both events here for Fredericton and Yangon.

The Future Role of Remote Sensing

The Spatial Sustain and Vector One pair discuss the future role of remote sensing. From SS: "Future scientists will have an increasing number of sensors and measurements to study, with sensors that continue to adapt to the needs of the missions. Individual sensor inputs as well as multi-sensor arrays will gain orbit to provide valuable top-down data. [...] Collaboration between countries that own the satellites is very important in order to realize the promise of these tools. The data should be shared with scientists from around the world and the scientists themselves must cooperate and collaborate with scientists from many nations in order to analyze the resulting data for optimum understanding." From V1: "It is one thing to have data from remote sensing platforms, but analysis of that information is also an important step, particularly when integrated with other information, often sourced elsewhere. This is sometimes referred to as fusion. We will see more of it, because more sensors of all types are generating information and the need to bring this information together into common views is highly important and useful." Second Galileo Test Satellite GIOVE-B Launched

Vector One links to the ESA announcement of the successful launch of GIOVE-B, the second Galileo test satellite. The SatNav blog links to the the BBC video of the launch. Additionally, Slashdot discuss the good news for Galileo, and here's their summary: "Simon (S2) writes to mention that Europe's second Galileo navigation satellite reached orbit this past weekend. Galileo is promising to offer several technological advances in comparison to the US-based GPS system but no longer promises to be a guaranteed service. "The Galileo programme now seems certain to go ahead, after a prolonged and painful shift from partly-private financing of the construction to public funds taken from unspent EU farm subsidies. This money would normally have been returned to donor nations, with the UK, Germany and the Netherlands as the biggest three. London MPs have expressed doubt as to whether the UK will receive value for the money it will pay, but have acknowledged that the British government doesn't actually have any choice about Galileo under EU funding rules."" SEOSat: Spain's Observation Satellite to EADS

spacer writes "After a longer-than-expected evaluation, Spain's aerospace institute CDTI and the European Space Agency (ESA) seem to have entered negotiation with EADS CASA for the spanish national observation satellite SEOSat-Ingenio. (The alternate offer was from Thales-España, who in spite of a better technical offer failed for not obtaining any commitment from other spanish companies, all of them exclusively dealing with EADS.) SEOSat-Ingenio is a SPOT-class observation satellite (2.5m multispectral) scheduled for launch in 2012. To some extent this may depict an European scene where after launchers (Ariane) and aeronautics industry (Airbus), all space observation also turns owned by the EADS monopoly. (touchstone to this will be the allocation of Meteosat third generation spacecrafts contract, later this year, for which competition is also theoretically open). The role of ESA in these deals more and more appears closer to the ordinary European Union political money allocation process ('obeying to geographical return') than to a technical advisor."

Satellite IDs Ships That Cut Cables

In a followup of the early February story about the world map of undersea Internet connections, Slashdot discussed earlier this week the satellite identification of ships that cut cables. Their summary: "Undersea telecom cable operator Reliance Globalcom was able to use satellite images to identify two ships that dropped anchor in the wrong place, damaging submarine cables and knocking Middle East nations offline in early February. The company used satellite images to study the movements of the two ships, and shared the information with officials in Dubai, who impounded the two vessels. The NANOG list has a discussion of where Reliance might have obtained satellite images to provide that level of detail. Google News links more coverage of the developments."

The EOPortal host an article on the coming expansion phase of satellite-based earth observation. The article's introduction: "Nearly 200 new satellites expected to be launched through 2017, almost double the number launched over the previous ten years. Growth will be fuelled primarily by the promising private sector and dynamic emerging space programs. “The satellite-based Earth observation sector is in a period of transformation.” remarked Adam Keith, Senior Analyst at Euroconsult, “Previously, established government programs were the dominant actors in the industry. Now we see many new projects coming from the private sector and emerging government space programs. Defunct U.S. Spy Satellite Falling From Orbit

Slashdot discuss a U.S. defunct spy satellite falling off orbit. There is also a follow-up story with speculations on that it is a radar satellite named USA 193. While not directly related to remote sensing satellites that us professionals can use, I learned much from the comments, including about adaptive optics and satellites using nuclear power instead of solar power (and rather unrelated, that coal combustion is more radioactive than nuclear waste). The Slashdot summary for the followup: ""Intelligent speculation has led one knowledgeable observer to believe the satellite recently announced to have failed is a radar satellite named USA 193. According to an earlier story on the satellite: 'The experimental L-21 classified satellite, built for the National Reconnaissance Office at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, was launched successfully on Dec. 14 [2006] but has been out of touch since reaching its low-earth orbit.'" Landsat-5 Resumes Operations... Again

VerySpatial informs us that despite several recent troubles, Landsat-5 is resuming operations. Last October troubles have been circumvented but the need for a Landsat Data Continuity Mission is obviously still relevant. From the USGS announcement: "The USGS is pleased to announce that Landsat 5 resumed imaging on January 10, 2008. Landsat 5 imaging was suspended on October 6, 2007 due to a battery cell failure with one of its two working batteries. [...] In November 2005, Landsat 5 transitioned to operations using a fixed solar array due to a failed motor which reduces the efficiency of battery charging. This, combined with the reduced power available from the batteries, increases the complexity of maintaining a safe power balance while collecting imagery. Over the next few weeks, the team will continue to increase collection of imagery while closely monitoring power. Data collected will be available soon following analysis and calibration of the data."

Canada's space technology sold to U.S. : leaving black hole

From an article of the Ottawa Sun in Canada : "Radarsat is one of the world's most sophisticated Earth surveillance satellites, able to zoom in on objects as small as 10 metres on land or sea, 'snapping' clear pictures through dense cloud and even at night. Canadian taxpayers have invested $445 million directly in the latest Radarsat, or about 85% of the total cost. Less than 30 days after Radarsat II made orbit in December, MDA has just sold the whole thing lock, stock and solar panels as part of its deal with U.S. Alliant." Satellites Threatened By Space Debris

Reminding us remote sensing satellites are not be be taken for granted, a few days ago Slashdot discussed a story on satellites threatened by space debris, specifically Chinese missile debris. Their summary: "Today's Washington Times runs a story about the increasing problem with space junk orbiting the earth. Debris from the anti-satellite missile test by the Chinese military last year threatens the integrity of more than 800 operating satellites, half of them belonging to the US. Two orbiting U.S. spacecraft were forced to change course to avoid being damaged soon after the incident. Air Force Brig. Gen. Ted Kresge, director of air, space and information operations at the Air Force Space Command in Colorado, estimates that "essentially (Chinese anti-satellite tests) increase the amount of space debris orbiting the Earth by about 20 percent", and the debris might threaten spacecraft for up to 100 years."

Japanese Mapping Satellite Fails to Provide Useful Images

From the All Points Blog summary : "The "Daichi" satellite went up about two years ago. Japan launched it to collect data to create maps of remote parts of the country. Today, the Geographical Survey Institute said that the images were blurry and could not be used for the detailed mapping planned.
