On the AGISRS list, there's a mention of the Call for Papers of the OGRS2009, the International Opensource Geospatial Research Symposium. From the website: "Main goals of this symposium are: * to build a panel of new scientific works built on open source models or using open source tools * to build and discuss a scientific framework about open source technology usage (benefits and limitations) * to provide a platform to network and develop ideas for future collaborative works between the academic research world and the everyday operational world (companies, local authorities…). The symposium will integrate scientific conferences (research papers), companies and authorities testimonies (showcases) and training sessions (labs)."

Gartner Does Not See IT Bust along with Economy

CIO Magazine reports that at Gartner's Symposium/ITExpo, analyst Peter Sondergaard predicted that, "In a worst-case scenario, our research indicates an IT spending increase of 2.3 percent in 2009, down from our earlier projection of 5.8 percent...Developed economies, especially the United States and Western Europe, will be the worst affected, but emerging regions will not be immune. Europe will experience negative growth in 2009; the United States and Japan will be flat."

The AGISRS list informs us of a new scientific journal named the Journal of Terrestrial Observation. The summary: "The Journal of Terrestrial Observation (JTO) publishes relevant, interesting, and challenging articles of research, analysis, or promising practice related to models, technologies, and applications associated with earth observation in the broadest sense. The Journal of Terrestrial Observation (JTO) is a quarterly, scholarly, peer-reviewed journal affiliated with the Purdue Terrestrial Observatory(PTO). The observatory project involves 30 faculty investigators from 20 departments within six schools at Purdue University. This important, timely Journal will be published simultaneously by Purdue University Press as a full-color, 96-page hardcopy journal and Web-based e-journal. JTO’s unique mission will be to examine the multi-disciplinary theories, models, technologies, and applications associated with earth observation in the broadest sense. The Journal will cover a wide range of topics including satellite remote sensing, aircraft reconnaissance, and proximate sensing utilizing in situ instrumentation. Periodic special issues devoted to specific emerging technologies and unique applications will accept both invited and openly-solicited articles for review"

Personalizing Tourist Maps

The GIS Lounge has an article presented at Siggraph about the automatic simplification of maps to produce tourist maps. From their summary : "Floraine Grable presented her work on automating tourists maps at last week’s SIGGRAPH conference. While street level imagery as Google’s Street View and Microsoft’s Pictometry data are popular, Grable found that providing too much information isn’t helpful for tourist maps, stating, “When the maps show every building, every street, it’s very difficult to find specific sites.“ Grable, who is based at UC Berkeley, worked with ETH Zurich to develop software that would automate which buildings to include on a map depending on the focus of the tourist map. In San Francisco all buildings were assigned a score based on their relevance as a tourist, shopping or dining site. All buildings scoring above a threshold would then be automatically added to the map based on the category selected."

SEWilco writes "Tracking electronic serial numbers in Bluetooth transmissions could be used to estimate travel times, following tests by engineers with the Indiana Department of Transportation and Purdue University. Signals were detected from about one percent of cars, which is sufficient for frequently updating travel time information."

NASA Shows Knowledge Planet at JavaOne Conference

ecoresearch writes "At this year’s JavaOne conference in San Francisco, NASA developers showed that virtual globes are not only suited to explore geographic maps, but can also serve as rendering engines for other types of imagery. Tom Gaskins, who leads the NASA World Wind engineering team, demonstrated the first public Knowledge Planet prototype, a Java applet developed by the Austrian IDIOM Research Project that visualizes large document collections using a landscape metaphor. The peaks of the virtual landscape indicate abundant coverage on a particular topic, whereas valleys and oceans represent sparsely populated parts of the information space. The applet draws upon the extensive news archive of the Media Watch on Climate Change, which provides a continuously updated account of media coverage on climate change and related issues." Google Earth, GIS, and the Great Divide

The GEB links to a ScienceDirect article named "Google Earth, GIS, and the Great Divide: A new and simple method for sharing paleontological data". The article underlines the fact that neogeography tools can be appropriate to some scientists without the need of a full-fledge GIS, reminding me of last December's neogeography vs GIS debate. From the article's introduction: "GIS is an extraordinarily powerful tool for many aspects of (geo)spatial analyses (Longley et al., 2001), but while used routinely to solve complex spatial analyses problems in many disciplines, its adoption within paleontology has been lagging (Conroy, 2006). Part of the problem is that (a) GIS software is expensive (usually prohibitively so to the individual paleontological researcher) and (b) very few paleontologists are trained in its use."

3D Reconstruction from a Single Still Image

Slashdot discuss a new tool from Stanford to generate 3D reconstructions from a single still image. Their summary: " [...] Stanford has a new website that not only shows you how cool their new 3-d modeling system is, but actually allows you to give it a try with your own photos. The system can take a 2-d still image and estimate a detailed 3-d structure which you can navigate. For each small homogeneous patch in the image, we use a Markov Random Field (MRF) to infer a set of "plane parameters" that capture both the 3-d location and 3-d orientation of the patch. The MRF, trained via supervised learning, models both image depth cues as well as the relationships between different parts of the image. Other than assuming that the environment is made up of a number of small planes, our model makes no explicit assumptions about the structure of the scene; this enables the algorithm to capture much more detailed 3-d structure than does prior art (such as Saxena et al., 2005, Delage et al., 2005, and Hoiem et el., 2005), and also give a much richer experience in the 3-d flythroughs created using image-based rendering, even for scenes with significant non-vertical structure." Eight months ago we learned "Google is licensing technology from Stanford University which will enable it to produce 3D building models automatically."

Chris Spagnuolo writes "According to an article in Smithsonian Magazine, white-crowned sparrows use real mental maps to guide their annual migrations. It's not instinct either...they actually develop the map over time. How do they do it? [...]" A little more from the blog entry: "How did the adults know where to fly? The researchers say that the sparrows instinctively fly due south on their first migration and along the way, they build a mental map of their wintering grounds that allows them to return there from any other location. The adults had a mental map of their flyway and were able to follow it to return their wintering grounds." I failed to locate the original SmithsonianMag article.
