The Earth is Square blog details Columbia Univerty's Virtual Ocean. From the official website: "Virtual Ocean integrates the GeoMapApp tool suite with the NASA World Wind 3-D earth browser to create a powerful new platform for interdisciplinary research and education. The Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) synthesis developed by the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS) is the primary base map for Virtual Ocean, providing access to a comprehensive multi-resolution compilation of satellite altimetry and multibeam bathymetry data. Several MGDS data sets are accessible in Virtual Ocean through live OGC-standard Web services. Options are also provided for users to import their own data sets." We'll soon find out of this kind of great efforts will be forgotten to the benefit of the rumored Google Ocean expected in a little more than a month. See also related stories below. Google 3D Mapping Of Oceans

CNET news is currently running an article about this. Here is an excerpt from their article : "The company has assembled an advisory group of oceanography experts, and in December invited researchers from institutions around the world to the Mountain View, Calif., Googleplex. There, they discussed plans for creating a 3D oceanographic map, according to sources familiar with the matter. The tool--for now called Google Ocean, the sources say, though that name could change--is expected to be similar to other 3D online mapping applications. People will be able to see the underwater topography, called bathymetry; search for particular spots or attractions; and navigate through the digital environment by zooming and panning. (The tool, however, is not to be confused with the "Google Ocean" project by France-based Magic Instinct Software that uses Google Earth as a visualization tool for marine data.) The Earth is Square blog informs us about GeoMapApp, a virtual globe using the NWW Java API. From the entry: " GeoMapApp is a data exploration and visualization tool that is continually being expanded as part of the Marine Geoscience Data System. Peio writes "The GeoGarage spatial image web server's team has released some new Google Maps mashup : [demo.geogarage.com] After having been processed with GeoGarage spatial image tiling specific solution, about 1018 NOAA raster nautical charts (RNC/BSB/KAP format) are displayed with advanced quilting (mosaic image with removed borders -collar maps- for a seamless rendering of multiple charts), and transparency management via layer opacity sliders (for terrestrial maps and orthophoto overlay). Mapping Human Impacts on the Global Marine Ecosystem

The PerryGeo blog proudly announced the datasets related to human impacts on the global marine ecosystem (sample map included). From the entry: ". We created or compiled 17 high-resolution global datasets of human-induced threats (land-based pollutants, fishing, shipping, climate change, etc.) and 20 ocean habitat datasets. These were combined to create an impact index which models the cumulative level of human-induced stress on our oceans. The results were published today in Science magazine and presented yesterday at the AAAS Annual Meeting. To summarize, we found that the entire ocean is affected and 40% is heavily impacted.
