GIS Day Communications - How are we doing?

While one goal of GIS Day is to educate those can attend events on or around that day, another is to simply to get the term and some sense of its meaning/role into day to day parlance. How are we doing based on online content?

The Plainfield Sun (suburban Chicago) offers an event notification, but with the headline "Event to spotlight new technology." There's no real discussion of what GIS is, in fact the acronym is not written out. Still, the nature of the topics suggests something about what it's role; the event covers "how the village uses the technology to improve services by demonstrating some of the applications including collecting field data utilizing GPS, the village's addressing process, crime mapping and Web GIS." I am surprised by "new" in the headline. It suggests to me that either GIS is "new" (we know it's pretty old...) or new to the area (if it is, that's not clear and based on the above discussion, it's pretty entrenched there).

The Sherwood Voice (Arkansas) notes its event and the keynote speaker from the National Weather Service who will speak on GIS and its use in tracking tornadoes that hit the area in February. Cool speaker! Again, GIS is not written out or defined. The article does note local and national sponsors, which is nice and may help those new to GIS figure something about it.

The University of New Hampshire already held its event, its 10th and the student newspaper not only wrote out what GIS stands for but profiled the types of people (700) who attended. Alas, it too stayed away from defining GIS is. I've attended the UNH event in past years; it's terrific!

Camp Pendleton is only to "it's [sic] 2nd annual" Geographic Information Systems day according the the Pendleton Scout and also doesn't describe GIS in detail. I do appreciate the goal, which does not include younger students: "The program was designed to encourage Marines, sailors and civilians to learn about the importance of geography and GIS technology."

What should we take away from these examples?

Property Prices Go Up in Second Life, University Receives Grant for Second Life Island

A few tech observers have noted that Linden Labs Second Life has not been making news lately. It did this weekend as Linden raised prices for the less expensive "land" in the virtual world by 50%. "The setup fee for the virtual space will increase by 50 percent from $250 to $375, and the monthly maintenance fees will increase by 66 percent from $75 to $125" as PaidContent reports. The reason for the price increase: the lower priced land is meant to be used as open space, not for condos or shops. And, alas, folks are using it for condos and shops...putting more pressure on servers and making it more expensive for Linden to operate. More expensive properties get "better servers" but open spaces are meant to share servers.

In other Second Life news, Pace University received a Verizon grant to establish a presence (that is its own island) in the virtual world. It's learning opportunity, notes the university.

UConn to Close Center for Geographic Information and Analysis

"Centers" at the university are reviewed regularly to insure they align with the criteria defined in the university's updated academic plan. The Center for Geographic Information and Analysis and the Center for Health Promotion the only two of 13 to selected to close. Many factors (duplication of effort, small size, failure to contribute) are among those that can prompt closure. It's not clear what exactly tipped the balance for CGIA.

CGIA was a partnership between the staff of the Homer Babbidge Library and the Department of Geography geared to streamline geographic data and spatial analytic techniques for research at the university. Robert Cromley, UCCGIA director and professor of geography noted that the center was "no cost" and can't understand the logic of the closure.

Penn State Geography's Coffee Hour Turns 40

Now, the story I heard about the every-Friday afternoon Geography Department Coffee Hour was that it was intended to prevent the grad students from getting an early start on their weekend drinking. It seemed to work when I was in the department; nearly all the grad students attended nearly every week. Today, the venerable institution celebrates its 40 anniversary with a special edition hosted by two emeritus professors: Wilbur Zelinsky and Pierce Lewis. The topic: The Importance of Coffee Hour. I'm sure they'll offer some better reason for its existence than I did!

I do wish I could be on campus for it but I'll have to participate via the Web.

SpatialWiki "is an Enterprise 2.0 offering for visual collaboration, deployable within SharePoint or with cloud-based storage. Earth Science Week and GIS

We are so tuned in to Geography Awareness Week and Geography Action and GIS Day that perhaps Earth Science Week, this week, gets overlooked. And perhaps its time to remove "Awareness" from the week's name? I like "just" "Geography Week."

I did find one reference to a demo day at Eastern Illinois University covered in the Daily Eastern News. Students saw various volcano demos (vinegar + baking soda and mentos + coke) as well as a GIS presentation.

As a followup on our three previous stories about online geospatial courses, earlier this month, Spatial Sustain shared an entry on new online GIS courses. From the entry: "The Johns Hopkins University just announced five new online courses in GIS. The online certificate in GIS includes a GIS overview, remote sensing, introduction to spatial analysis, advanced GIS modeling and management of GIS projects. This latest online GIS course offering joins just a select few universities that offer online-only coursework." I was also happily surprised to learn about iTunes U ("University") offering several pertinent (and free) podcasts and videocasts, such as 20 hours of geospatial courses from Pennsylvania State University.

Students (and others): Read this!

Amy Gahran over at Poynter details why a blog is Media Career Insurance. I could probably rewrite the argument and suggestions for GIS careers, but it'd be redundant (besides, she's a better writer than I...)

These days your online presence, professional and otherwise, is part of your resume. When I started out in GIS I recall reading that the best way to "become known" as an expert was to write articles in your field. I didn't set out to do that, exactly, but the early writing I did in print certainly got me known and ultimately here at Directions. Now, however, everyone, CEOs, tech folks and everyone in between may be called upon to host or contribute to a blog or blogs related to their positions. Why not make it easier for potential hires to evaluate your writing skills/thinking/creativity/personality/how you react to criticism/etc. on your blog? Be yourself, but be professional. Consider the geoblogs/bloggers you read: Would you hire any of those folks? Inquire about the products the company behind them offers? If you read them even somewhat regularly, you get a sense of them, or an opinion at the very least.

I have my Penn State MGIS students post videos and reports to personal blogs and then have their peers offer questions and comments. I want them to get a feel for writing and reading blogs in a "professional" setting. I have no doubt they'll be reading and likely writing them at some point.

Electric Gettysburg Map Still has no Home

More than a year ago I noted the huge old map was too big to move from its building, which is being torn down, so the plan was to cut it up. Now an update:

No one's yet claimed ownership, but the Park Service is speaking to six organizations interested in taking it. It would be donated to a non-profit or government agency. The plan is to cut up the map, mitigate issues with embedded asbestos and have it out by October or November. The building is to be demolished in December and the area returned to how it looked during the battle.

The savetheelectricmap.com website, developed by Jon DeKeles of Post Falls, Idaho, in April, is still fighting the good fight.

Toyota Grant to Fund Environmental Literacy Education with Geotech

The grant ($300,000) goes to Lehigh University (I spent a summer there in high school) to build professional materials for teacher and curricula for middle school environmental literacy.

The program will rely on geospatial information technologies (GIT) to help students analyze information and data on three core topics: energy, climate change and the impact of human activity on the environment. Issues such as urban and suburban sprawl, water resource usage, pollution, and ecosystem management will be included in the curriculum.

The WELIM [Web-enhanced Environmental Literacy and Inquiry Modules] initiative is a pilot program that directly addresses both concerns simultaneously using GIT. The technologies, which range from handheld GPS systems to Web satellite imagery, help students explore geography and collect data while becoming more familiar with their environment.

The Chinese taking more golds than another other country? A first olympic gold medal for Mongolia (in Judo)? Perhaps. Open Source Text Books

Slashdot highlights an LA Times front page story about professors dumping traditional text in favor of open source and non-free online texts.

We are doing that at Penn State Online Masters in GIS. So far, two texts are open source: Open Web Mapping (updated URL per course author comment below) and The Nature of Geographic Information. I'm working to open source my course (Comparative GIS) for Winter quarter.
UMass with our without geographic reference?

Faculty and alumnae of UMass are hopeful the a new chancellor, Robert Holub will consider removing the Amherst from the main campus' name: University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The school has several other sites: Boston, Worcester (Med Center), Dartmouth and Lowell. The idea is to make the flagship campus more "flaghshippy," raise the profile, make it seem less of a commuter school, and bring more resources. Those on the other side suggest that having the geographic references makes all the campuses equal. They are not, of course, since you can only study medicine in Worcester. The other issue, for me, a long time Baystater, is that Amherst is way far away from the center of the Massachusetts population and action: Boston. That's fine; I think it's great to get students out of the city so they are not distracted (State College, PA anyone?)

I just don't want anyone from out of state thinking they are coming to Boston if they attend the main campus. Alas, Amherst is not as famous at State College. Besides, college names offer a great way to learn geography. As kid I had to look up this odd place called Miami of Ohio. And I love that there's UNC-Chapel Hill; what a nice mental picture. And, I've learned that it's the University of Alabama in (not at, no hyphen) Huntsville. No, keep the Amherst.

Hopeworks 'N Camden Completes First Print Map

Hopeworks 'N Camden has been deservedly featured at many GIS conferences. The program aims to keep Camden youth in school and on track with technology training, including GIS work. This week the program finished its first print work - a free map of the city. Funded by student-sold and sometimes student-created ads, the maps remaining from the original run of 8000 will be available for free. Another use for this newly acquired data? Perhaps it can be contributed to OpenStreetMap?

SDSU Tackles Landsat Issues

NASA awarded $3.29 million to a five-year project led by professor David Roy of South Dakaota State's Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence. The project is in collaboration with USGS. The two key parts of the project:

(1) Process "Landsat observations every 16 days for all the contiguous United States and Alaska for a seven-year period and process those data so that theyre available to the user community over the Internet in a seamless manner."

(2) "The project also sets out to fill in gaps in the data. Since 2003, Roy said, there has been a problem with the Landsat sensor so that it has been unable to record the data for about 22 percent of each image. In addition, an average of about 35 percent of the Landsat data is obscured by clouds." The team will fill gaps using MODIS data.

Execute Shuttle Topography Mission at Home

There's a simulation (aka "game") called Space Shuttle Mission 2007. It includes actual "stories" from those missions and "players" get to toggle switches and follow each mission at different levels of difficulty. The game is $49.95. (I'm not a gamer and this was all news to me!)

News today there's a new set of free missions to download. One is based on the February 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Players "experience the launch, on-orbit mission including the deployment and operation of the special radar equipment, and return to Earth by manually landing the Endeavour at the Kennedy Space Center."

It sounds geeky, but also pretty cool and educational.

Teachable Moments Courtesy of the Blogosphere

The response the "Biggest Drawing in the World" in the blogosphere (noted here at APB, with appropriate skepticism in the comments) helped get clarification (it was there, in red, yesterday) from its creator. In particular, that the drawing was not made by a suitcase holding a GPS that travelled the globe on DHL vessels. As suggested by many, GPS wouldn't work inside a suitcase inside a plane/boat. And, the paths tracked don't make any sense; some stop in the middle of the ocean. Video below.

Also this month, the Air Force withdrew, at least temporarily, an ad that included misleading narration suggesting a single strike against a single satellite could take down cell phones, crash bank machines and disable GPS navigation. Again, the blogosphere pointed out the misleading part (it'd take downing several satellites to do those things). Video below.

These are great stories for instructors to use to help students understand how technology works and to highlight that you can't believe everything you read or see in a video!

As of July 1, Dr. Daniel Griffith of UT Dallas will serve a three-year term as the journals editor. Griffith is an Ashbel Smith Professor of Geospatial Information Sciences in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences. Per a UT Dallas news article, he will be the first editor in 18 years who is not based at Ohio State University.

Also of note, this quote from Dr. Griffith: "A lot of graduate students enroll in our GIS program to complement their professional skills. The use of this technology has really taken off during the last 10 years, and will only continue to grow."

Bilko & MultiSpec: Remote Sensing Training Software

The AGISRS list has an interesting thread on remote sensing software used for basic RS training. In the discussion, UNESCO's Bilko and Purdue's MultiSpec were on the spot. From Bilko's page: "Bilko is a complete system for learning and teaching remote sensing image analysis skills. Current lessons teach the application of remote sensing to oceanography and coastal management, but Bilko routines may be applied to the analysis of any image in an appropriate format, and include a wide range of standard image processing functions." From MultiSpec's page: "It results from an on-going multiyear research effort which is intended to define robust and fundamentally based technology for analyzing multispectral and hyperspectral image data, and to transfer this technology to the user community in as rapid a manner as possible." gvSIG and Sextante, ILWIS and SPRING were also mentioned, there are other free and open source remote sensing software, such as GRASS GIS, OSSIM and RAT, but they're not focused training newcomers. Our Education topic will reveal a few other tools for the classroom.

Clark University's Turner Heads to Arizona State

Arizona State University at Tempe's new School of Geographic Sciences has recruited Billie Lee Turner, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and most recently director of the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. He specializes in sustainability science.
Turner will join Arizona's faculty in July as the school's first Gilbert F. White chair in environment and society. Arizona State's School of Geographic Sciences launched in 2006 focuses on interdisciplinary study.

The university has hired four additional faculty members with expertise in urbanism, landscape ecology, spatial analysis, and geocomputation. "It's very unusual that a university makes a major investment in geographic sciences the way ASU has done," says Mr. Anselin [Luc Anselin, founding director of the geography school and director of its GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation]. "I've never seen a geography department hire five full professors in one year."

About 20 years ago Mr. Turner sat next to me on a plane to an AAG meeting. Before he told me who he was, he extracted that I was a geographer and proceeded to test me on my ability to explain our discipline. I recall thinking that this was a very mean thing to do. I've gotten over it and might perhaps do the same to a newly minted graduate.

Teachable Moment: How long is the Iditarod Trail?

The Anchorage Daily News reports on why there are so many answers - so related to the changing route, others to technology, others to history... Interesting stuff.

No matter the "best" answer for this year's course - to be determined this year with GPS devices aboard a number of sleds - I'll be remembering "1049." Why? That's what Hobo Jim quotes in the song: Iditarod Trail.
