PaidContent reports that Perry Evans' local search company Local Matters has recalled its plan to go public based on, that's right, the economy. Local Matter filed the paper work to go public in 2006 and it never really went anywhere. I do hope they weather the storm and can give it another go on the other side.

IDC Pegs SIM Market Growth at 14.2%

David Sonnen, an analyst with IDC, said that the size of the spatial information market (SIM) is about $2.8 billion and that he pegs the compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) at 14.2%. Sonnen said that, "We don't see a lot of downside unless the economy tanks completely." Sonnen made his remarks today at the MetaCarta Public User's Group Meeting in Tysons Corner, Virginia. -
Maptech Sale Complete

I wrote about the sale of Maptech back in April. Now word from a former employee (nothing official) that the company closed its doors on August 29th. The various parts have been divided up among several companies and one product, Pocket Navigator has been discontinued. Of perhaps most interest of the geospatial community:

Great Public GIS Spawns Private GIS Firms?

I'm not making a direct correlation here, but note that Qatar has won many a GIS award (six at the ESRI conference this year alone). Today news of a newly funded startup: "Qatar Science & Technology Park has awarded a $400,000 to Qatar Navigator, a local start-up company, to develop an automated map of the country." It's to develop a navigation database with POIs to be licensed for use on GPSs, phones, etc. The local university students will be involved and the project is expected to take five months.

Faneuil Media Closes up Shop

I'm a fan of underdogs, of folks who try out their idea with their own money and try to make it work. Sometimes, it doesn't. The Faneuil Media guys gained fame with some great interactive Google Maps mashups for the New York Times and Boston.com. But their vision for local media tools didn't play out. Rick Burns, with whom I had a pleasant lunch last year in Cambridge, explains why the effort failed and what they learned. Some good insights on Google, the marketplace and more. Both he and the other founder have new gigs as they shut down in the coming weeks. -

TomTom Beats Q2 Estimates, Stock Jumps

Second-quarter profit beat analysts' estimates pushing the stock up as much as 2.95 euros, or 18 percent, to 19 euros. That was the biggest gain since TomTom first sold shares in 2005. Revenue was down due the acquisition of Tele Atlas, things seem rosy: "Despite all the hassle in the financial market, all the bad headlines, people are still buying navigation devices,'' Chief Executive Officer Harold Goddijn said.

I suspect other bloggers received these e-mails, which suggest some of the newer marketing techniques.
Yesterday I received an e-mail asking for a blog post on a data company in exchange for a data file.
Today my company (not Directions Media) received an e-mail noting an aerial company would be in my state (one of ten listed) and invited me to buy new aerial coverage taken from their Cessna/helicopter (obliques) for a flat fee.
Not all the geo-entrepreneurs are doing Web 2.0 stuff! -

GPS Business News reports that Bloomberg reports that the company is looking for an injection of capital or a takeover. I guess having both the Tele Atlas and NAVTEQ acquisitions go through did not play out for the smaller data company. -

The press release appeared yesterday and reminds me that its been rather quiet on the acquisition front. The sale is expected to close at the end of the month. MapFrame, based in Dallas outfits more than field 35,000 workers at 30 major U.S. utilities. The company was founded in 1991 and currently has about 40 employees. GE's last geo-related acquisitions include Smallworld in 2000 and MJ Harden in 2003. GE sold MJ Harden, expect for the pipeline part, to GeoEye in 2007. -

TomTom Acquisition of Tele Atlas a Go

The word came today from the EU. Basically the Commission said there was no reason fear unfair strategies:
"The Commission found that the merged company would be unlikely to pursue these strategies because its ability to restrict access to digital maps ... would be limited by the presence of an upstream competitor, Navteq," it said.
The new company "would have no incentive to restrict access to digital maps because the sales of digital maps lost by Tele Atlas would not be compensated by additional sales of personal navigation devices," it said.

Final Day for Canadian Gov on MDA Sale to Alliant

Just about a month ago Canadian Industry Minister Jim Prentice rejected the proposed $1.3 billion sale of MDA's space and information systems divisions (maker of the Radarsat-2 satellite) to Alliant Techsystems Inc. The reason: there was no "net benefit" for the country.
Alliant had 30 days to respond and convince official otherwise. Today's the end of that period and it looks like the decision will stand. Alliant announces year end earnings today. It's expected charges related to the failed purchase will be applied to Q4 earnings.

"People": TomTom Acquisition a Go; Expect Announcement on May 14

Bloomberg actually cited "wo people with direct knowledge of the case" on the matter:
The European Commission will clear the 2.9 billion-euro ($4.5 billion) purchase on May 14, a week before the regulator's May 21 deadline to rule on the transaction, said the people, who requested anonymity because the decision isn't public.
That'd be next Wednesday. TomTom of course said nothing.

Geostartup WineMap.org's Business Proposition

Jordan Thomas started WineMap.org, an Internet business that matches grape growers with buyers. This week he pitched it to potential investors. Here's his status:
Thomas and his partners already have put $400,000 of their own money into the two-year-old business. They're looking for another $700,000 to take it to the next level, Thomas said.
WineMap.org has the potential to revolutionize the $3 billion annual winegrape market, he said. It allows growers to show their vineyard locations online and offer their grapes for sale.
Growers will pay WineMap $1,200 per year, less than half of what it would cost to sell through a broker, Thomas said.
So far, about 1,500 growers are using the Web service, representing 3,000 vineyards in California and Oregon.

Canada Rejects Alliant Bid for MDA Space Unit

The $1.32 billion bid by Alliant Techsystems Inc., to purchase the space and radar business of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates feel through. No real reason was given by the Canadian government, save a lack of benefit to Canada, per the industry minister who sent the rejection letter to Alliant this week. Alliant has 30 days to reply and talks are apparently ongoing.

CNN: Wall Street Wary of TA/NAVTEQ Acquisitions

CNN Money reports that both pending acquisitions of Tele Atlas and NAVTEQ have "lost their bearings." NAVTEQ's stock is trading almost $10 below the $78 per share offer from Nokia.
Yesterday was the deadline for TomTom to respond to EU questions about the acquisition. What did the EU ask?
Whether:
(1) TomTom and Tele Atlas would keep sensitive information from rival GPS customers confidential,
(2) Tele Atlas would provide TomTom competitors inferior maps,
(3) the combination created efficiencies otherwise unattainable.
The article goes on to note that what happens with TomTom/TA will likely impact Nokia/NAVTEQ and that the drop in stock prices suggests Wall Street is wary. -

Map Store Declares Bankruptcy in Florida

This time it's MAPSource, which had its big store in appropriately named, Town 'N Country FL. The dealer filed for bankruptcy Jan. 28, three months after its three stores and printing plant closed.

"Is the Geo-web Right for You?"

Writing at CMSWatch (that's content management system watch), analyst Theresa Regli asks that question. She notes the flurry of geo-mashups and explains what MetaCarta offers. Her conclusion:
While this is surely a growing piece of the 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle that is Enterprise Content Management, there's not necessarily a practical business application for the geo-web in your enterprise. Don't be too quick to be dazzled by the demo; after all, do you really need your CMS to tell you where the local pizza joints are? MetaCarta claims that 74% of documents on the Internet are "geo-relevant," or plottable on a map. Is the same true of the content in your enterprise? Will plotting your documents geographically add value to the experience, or enable you to manage or find content more effectively? Perhaps, but as with any software that may look cool on the surface, be sure to assess your real business needs before you invest.
