Pitney Bowes Offers Sliverlight-based FireLocator

Arthur R. Berrill, Vice President of Advanced Concepts and Technology at Pitney Bowes let us know about the new FireLocator app, currently in beta, thinking it may be of use to readers and those dealing with the current California fires. The app was created by Pitney Bowes Advanced Concepts and Technologies (AC&T) in collaboration with Pitney Bowes MapInfo. It provides geocoding to find fires (current and historical) around specific addresses. Data comes from the usual "fire" places including:

- NASA Modis Data
- Incident Information System (InciWeb)
- GeoMac Multi Agency Coordination (GeoMac)
- California Wild-Fire Zones

And there's other fire-related content including:
- pictures from Flikr
- news from San Bernardino Sun

Underneath you'll find Virtual Earth, Silverlight, BP MapInfo's Envinsa and BP MapInfo's geocoding. This is the first I've heard of AC&T.

You can access a video (movie reel icon) about the app and the "about" information ("i" icon) on the right of the tool/search bar. I didn't see them on my first visit. The main interactive feature (at this point) seems to be the ability to save specific locations which can be visited in the future.

Netezza to Announce Spatial Extension to Data Warehouse Appliance

We in the geospatial world have over the past decade or so wrapped our brains around spatial extensions for databases. Im the first to admit, it took me quite a bit of time to get used to the idea that geometry was just another field like data and number. Now we are sort of blase about yet another database adding a geospatial type. Thats good because I need to blow your mind just a little.

Next week Netezza a data warehouse appliance company will announce its spatial extension to its database. It has a database?you ask. Ive never heard of it. You and me both! But I spoke to Jonathan Shepherd, who heads the geospatial initiative at Netezza, who gave me the lowdown. Peter Batty was also on the call. He's been hinting at this for a while.

Non-Geo Person Reviews MapInfo

Trudy Walsh reviewed MapInfo 9.5 in GCN. Walsh makes it clear she's not a GIS person:

"As a casual map aficionado, I found MapInfo fun to work with after I had mastered a few simple file opening techniques."

Some of her comments confused me.

"This version of MapInfo has taken great pains to work in an open source way with as many other kinds of files, systems and software as possible. "

"It also gives you access to the Open Geospatial Consortiums Web Feature Service, a service offered by an international standards consortium that lets clients retrieve and update geospatial data encoded in Geography Markup Language. "

She ended up giving MapInfo 9.5 an "A" for performance, an "A" for features and a "C+" for ease of use. I'm guessing the last score is in comparison to Google Earth, the only other product mentioned. My comparative GIS students who have done projects with MapInfo all pointed to its ease of use as one of its strengths.

Pitney Bowes Ad on Location Intelligence in New York Times

In the "there's something you don't see everyday" department comes this ad which accompanied my daily e-mail from the New York Times. While in the geospatial arena we speak of location intelligence (we even host a conference by that name) I'm hard pressed to imagine New York Times readers as savvy as they are, know what it is. Perhaps that's the point?

Vince Poscente, a former Canadian Olympic star in speed skiing delivered a rousing keynote address at the Pitney Bowes MapWorld Conference last week, a merged event between the user groups of MapInfo and Group 1. Now a motivational speaker, Poscente provided a exhilarating ride into the world of business strategy and how to deal with a few bumps along the way. And in his case, a bump led to losing a medal at the 1992 Olympics.

Poscente offered that in todays business climate he defines companies in four categories:
The Zeppelin, a lumbering giant with little forward motion.
The Balloon, something that just floats along with a few ups and downs along the way.
The Bottle Rocket, a high flier at first but one likely to fizzle later and drop like a stone.
The Jet, where alignment and speed must coincide to achieve optimum results.

Pitney Bowes Soft Launches Business Insights

The Pitney Bowes MapInfo and Pitney Bowes Group 1 Software divisions will be going through a gradual transition to a new name. Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI?) will be introduced throughout the fall. During this time, the MapInfo name is NOT disappearing and the company will still be focusing on location intelligent solutions. Mike Hickey, current president of both divisions will remain as president and will now directly report to the CEO of Pitney Bowes. Hickey said the name change underwent substantial vetting.

My take: At first, I thought it was a clever way to use "BI" as a double meaning but Hickey says that was mere coincidence. The name is OK. It's not lightening in a bottle but is not bland either. It says what they do and that's enough. In general, what you have to appreciate is that the combined entity has a lot of products and a substantial cache of very targeted solutions. The trick, as the company fully appreciates, is that they need to find a workflow to offer clients that clearly shows how the solutions can be used in tandem, or not. PBBI has several stand alone products that don't need to be integrated. Naming is important and not trivial but perhaps of secondary concern to explaining that value of the solutions.

Here in "Sin City" there are discussions that will hopefully lead to a more "heavenly" host of ideas as this first, combined meeting of the user groups from MapInfo and Group 1 customers gets underway. MapWorld '08 is the first conference held jointly with those users from Group 1 Software since Pitney Bowes (PB) acquired MapInfo last year.

How Green is Pitney Bowes?

Industry Week asks all sorts of green questions of Paul Robbertz, Vice President, Environment Health & Safety. Most of the interview is about how the company behaves (measures carbon footprint, offsets it, etc.) but there is a tidbit about its products being green:

Q. Have you changed/modified your products/developed new products as a result of your initiatives?

A. We have practiced environmental responsibility since the company's founding in 1920. The company's business model is to optimize the transfer of information through the mailstream, minimizing extraneous waste and thus reducing environmental impact. In today's marketplace, it is necessary to reposition products and services to highlight environmental attributes, but not necessary to re-invent core businesses. For example, our location intelligence and geospatial technologies help customers pinpoint the most appropriate population to receive a particular mailpiece, reducing the amount of unwanted mail.
GIS Use in Crime Feels Burden of its own Success

Use of GIS in crime analysis has grown to 23 analysts in Toronto since its introduction in the early 1990s. The data is delivered as "electronic bulletin boards" (not something I'm familiar with) to staff in the field and in patrol cars. Apparently, these are static maps; the hope is to make them interactive using MapXtreme and to integrate other data sources.

And were looking to give the frontline officers the ability to [query directly] and drill down further.

Analysts also have limited ability to bring in data from different sources. What we are working toward is some type of metadata layer that allows us to...tap into the various different data sources regardless of where they are and be able to display that spatially or in a tabular format, [the services crime analysis training and development coordinator Det. Constable Manny ] San Pedro said.

Sure sounds like users are convinced of GIS use; now it's time to update the technology.

Pitney Bowes CEO: Rebranding in Progress

Good thing, I can't figure if its Pitney Bowes MapInfo or Pitney Bowes Software or what.

"We are in the process of actually rebranding across the entire company," [CEO Murray] Martin said. "With 85 acquisitions, it's important for us to look at the whole brand and the whole brand philosophy."

Martin Murray, PB's CEO said the acquisition went without a hitch and pointed out the company was surprised by the talent it acquired, pointing to Mike Hickey and Mark Cattini. More important the region, Murray sees MapInfo growing to $1 billion in revenue in the next four years. (In fiscal 2006, MapInfo had revenues of $165 million, per the Times-Union.)
