Is GoogleMaps GIS?

The High Earth Orbit blog has an article discussing this question. Here is a snippet : "In my previous post about building a KML of the California green building directory I made a very off-hand comment about how a GoogleMap does not mean GIS. Andres has challenged my comment and provoked a very thoughtful discussion. My original comment was merely based on the original article of the Green Building site that seemed to imply that GoogleMaps alone meant a GIS. My feelings are that mapping tools have become ubiquitous and easy to use - not requiring advanced expertise to utilize for visualizing geospatial information." Better KML Rendering With Google Maps API For Flash?

The thematicmapping blog updates us on a previous article with an example of displaying vectors using the Google Maps Flash API. From their summary : "Most of the current map APIs quite cleverly use use the build-in vector support in Firefox and Internet Explorer (and others). Firefox supports Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), while Microsoft use the obsolete Vector Markup Language (VML). The Google Maps API and OpenLayers API automatically check your browser and draws the vectors with the appropriate technology. But the SVG/VML/DOM technology has some serious performance issues - if you add many complex polygons the browser will run terribly slow. While we wait for HTML 5 (and browsers to support it), Flash APIs might be a better solution." For more information and relative links, please visit the article link above.

MapServer 5.2 Beta 1

Tommy's Scratchpad brings us news about mapservers latest release. From the blogs summary : "We just released beta1 yesterday. And lots of new features (enhanced templating, SQL Server 2008 support, Google API support for tiling) and bug fixes. Oh, and the OGC support grows; WCS 1.1, WFS 1.1, SOS 1.0.0 to name a few new implementations. While full CITE compliance is not quite complete for some of these, I think the initial implementations are very solid, and have already passed many of the CITE assertions." MapInfo Pro 9.5 release announced

Pitney Bowes MapInfo announced the release of MapInfo Professional 9.5. Available mid June 2008, some key new functionality includes: new data editing tools, support for Oracle Database 11g and Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and support for .NET. Hopefully Pitney Bowes will be aggresive in improving the MapInfo product line. I'm curious what the reviews and commentary will be for this release.
