An army of amateur online cartographers is embarking on what could prove the most concerted effort to map India since the British Empire tackled the task. Fed up with getting lost in Bangalore, the sprawling centre of the country’s IT industry, a team of engineers from Google, the largest search engine on the Net, has devised a tool to let web users annotate and amend satellite images to produce useful maps. Within weeks of its launch, tens of thousands of Indians have filled in details of

When Alternativa3D showed some demos with their parallax mapping, I always thought it’d be interesting to try it myself without having to resort to PixelBender. Well, I did, and I wasn’t happy how some things turned out. There was no overlap of objects, and sharp edges would come out looking odd or distorted. Then, taking another look at their demo, I noticed they conveniently used slanted or smooth edges all the time without any possible overlap. Reading up on some stuff, I decided to make t

Making decisions is one of those things that we do every single day, but how much thought do you put into your decisions? Is it usually a simple matter of weighing up the pros and cons and making what you feel is the right choice? Have you really explored all the information you require to make the right decision? Mind mapping your big decisions is a sure fire way of getting a more informed perspective on your decisions. Not only will you be able to explore the different aspects of your dec

I was going to write a post about mind mapping or, more specifically, where my mind journeys while I glance away from homework for a second or two. Since these journeys take longer than seconds and I don't have much time, I'll save that post for tomorrow. While I was surfing the web recently I read somewhere that if someone experiences a writer's block, they should listen to Johann Sebastian Bach, not to be confused with Sebastian Bach (above). This prompted me to look up some of Bach's pieces.

Data's Demon Tue, 2008-10-07 00:33 — Stephen Wright I’m very much of two minds about the whole issue of “data-mining,” as Lev Manovich puts it – or “data-recovery” as others might say inasmuch as we have all contributed to that ever-expanding mother-lode – with which Renée Ridgway has invited us to engage in her recent, thought-igniting post. The sheer magnitude of data accumulation is positively diabolical – or at least demonic, to use a more genteel term for the hellish little fellow. Indeed

Das ist gut gelungen. Auch zeigt Zeit Online, dass sich so ein Projekt mit für jeden zugänglichen externen Mitteln bauen lässt und man keine extra Flash-Oberfläche zu designen braucht: Auf einer Google-Map können

VectorOne posed the question whether or not geospatial technology could drive political consensus on environmental issues. Environmental issues such as flooding, disease, conservation, and/or water quality require top geographic information, spatial analysis and integration. The GIS and spatial technologies industry should assist anyone making decisions to better understand these issues and make informed decisions based on intelligent information and geodata. Geodata is not available to all –

Earlier this week I posted the first of two articles on the challenges of making sense of online campaign results. The first posting addressed the shortcomings of relying on cookie-based tracking to quantify results. This posting addresses the supporting role of display and email ads, and explains why Google gets more credit than it should for your online marketing success. I use an analogy we can all relate to… the proverbial Wingman. The Wingman Effect Another impediment to measurement

We all hear it and a lot of us do it. Groan over voice, "Ugh not THIS map." Everyone has maps like that, well now's the time to act on those feelings. Over the coming weeks we're going to be getting the community's help in trimming down the map list on our servers. Now how small will the maplists get? Well these are community servers, so logically we are leaving it up to the community. As long as you all are voting to remove certain maps we'll be removing them. How will we be choosing maps

‘Oops I’m Late’ phones ahead for you October 2nd, 2008 Phone ahead. If you’re driving to a meeting and realize you’re going to be late, what do you do? Pick up the phone and call ahead, right? But this means, possibly, trying to find the number for the person you’re meeting with, which can be dangerous if you’re in motion. And possibly illegal. Mobile app Oops I’m Late does the calling for you. It runs on GPS-equipped Windows smartphones. If you start the app and give it access to your

If you are still thinking about Compassion vs. Conversion then it may not make sense to talk about mapping and missions. There are many things that I have heard with regard to mapping and the Great Commission. One is, “if you define the task with great specificity, you take God out of the picture.” Another is, “If you define the greatest needs and place them on a map, you are not looking at the places where God is really working.” Yet others have articulated that the showing the work God has

As a tech blog this isn’t supposed to be a content of this blog, especially not after so long break. But no matter how awkward the topic may seem I insist that technology has everything to do with this topic, just in different ways. So what’s the catch? I will spare you the ongoing showdown of Ukrainian cargo vessel Faina held by pirates which you can pickup from almost any news site. Whole worlds knows the Faina is currently moored off Somalia’s coast close to the town of Hoboyo (long: 5.34
