Dr. G Madhavan Nair, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISR0), has announced plans to compete on the subcontinent with the market created by Google Earth. A couple of weeks ago, I took a look at the iPhone application earthscape, and since then they have upgraded to version 2.0 available on iTunes. They did a lot of nice improvements on the user interface, making it a lot easier to navigate, instead of being spread across several pages, it is all on one main page. I’ve wanted a GPS for sometime now. But I really felt like it was just another gadget that would be nice to have for capturing my routes, but not a necessity to have for biking. I’ve been riding for 17+ years now without one and have gotten by just fine. I would always say that if some code already exists to implement a particular piece of functionality then you should use that library. There are so many great open source components that implement pretty much everything you can imagine that you would be foolish not to reuse them.
