Considering that the US produces 602.3 billion pounds of corn crop annually, I thought it would be interesting to map where most of our corn is coming from in the US. The type of corn, maize, which is the one most widely produced is a cousin to sweet corn that is a high-sugar variant. 99 percent of the US corn crop is actually the starchy, tough plant, known as maze. The following map shows the values, in metric tons (MT) of corn produced by each state. By clicking on a state you can see how mu

Each time you select a different data set, the size of each country increases or decreases in comparison to other countries. For example, if you select the data set about steel production, the size of China is huge relative to African countries. On the other hand, if you

I would always say that if some code already exists to implement a particular piece of functionality then you should use that library. There are so many great open source components that implement pretty much everything you can imagine that you would be foolish not to reuse them. The only place where I would go against my own advice is at the data access layer of an application. Libraries that implement data access components are available in abundance. You can get both commercial and open sour

Image credit: Olivander's Identity Crisis #4 It was recently announced by Mary Washington’s new president that the next academic year (2009/2010) will be “The Year of the Digital Campus” at UMW. While I think we are uniquely positioned to make the most of this idea, I also wonder what it means exactly. But, in all fairness, I don’t think anyone is entirely sure what it means just yet. Nonetheless, the Division of Teaching and Learning—never short on ideas!—recently sat down with UMW’s new CIO

It started four years ago in the UK as a project to create a free and editable world map. What began as a few geogeeks wandering the streets with their GPS’s has turned into a global movement with over 75,000 registered contributors. check out the animated gif on how it developed over the past 2 years here I find it impressive how committed some people are: Most impressive has been the takeup in Germany: 300 volunteers mapped 99.8% of Hamburg (German), and there is now a German-language Open

According to Jason Kottke, Steven Johnson, author of Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software, thinks very highly of Eating the Sun: How Plants Power the Planet, a new book by Oliver Morton. Eating the Sun was also mentioned by Clive James in his contribution to the TLS Books of the Year 2008: Among current books about science, my favourite is Oliver Morton’s Eating the Sun (Fourth Estate), which makes a thriller out of photosynthesis. Today the “Kane County Chronical” is running a story about a local resident who found that Fermi Lab is located in the wrong place on Google Maps. He is quoted as saying “I wondered what was going on, It just seemed very weird.” Wierd indeed, you see Google has chosen to use Tele Atlas as thier data provider of choice. This means that a European data provider is providing map data for the United States. This is just one example of how much Tele Atlas’s data stinks! So while Google Maps is f

I’ve had questions as to what happened to my Ethereal Memory game from 6 months ago. I would like to make it very clear that this project is still in works and IS NOT DEAD AT ALL. I have been very busy at college recently and had little time to work on it. I have also restarted the game from scratch a numberous of times and finally have the correct game engine changes I wanted. So hopefully that should clear any further spam on this up xPP. I plan to post some new screenshots or a video soon, bu
