Just about everybody already knows about the hidden administrator C$ share that is always built into the Windows file sharing however you might have wondered why you couldn’t use that in Windows Vista. The reason why this doesn’t work is because of UAC (User Account Control) that Vista is becoming (in)famous for. By default Vista does not permit UAC elevation over the network with just a local user account. Good news, there is a registry key that we can use to change this behavior to work the

Here is some interesting news that may impact developers using the Google Maps API (our Google Maps API profile). Google has recently made a couple of updates to their terms of service and have posted the the new terms of service here. There was an initial update made in early November, but one that lead to some debate and confusion about a couple of points, which in turn to a subsequent update. The net result is that the terms of service have been streamlined and some previous restrictions hav

[Editor's note: I created this Flash-based Google Mashup to accompany an investigative piece (1 | 2 | 3) about the Washington, D.C. Public Charter School system in Sunday's Washington Post newspaper. Map markers can be turned on and off with check boxes or by using data range sliders to drill in on which schools are [...] ’

I recently came across the topic of social mapping thanks to a former student who is now doing some excellent people-centered development work in Haiti. Social mapping is about participatory mapping but the purpose of social mapping is not to build exact replicas of one’s environment albeit at a smaller scale. Social mapping is carried out without any rulers; simply with some pens or crayons and whatever paper is available. The goal of social mapping is to capture local knowledge and social perc

Having worked in intranets for over a decade now I know how easy it is to forget who all the work is really for and who else might be affected by the decisions we make. I have found it useful, especially when changing things , to try and keep the users and stakeholders of my intranet in the forefront of my mind. I manage this by using an approach I call the ‘User/Stakeholder Map’. You can use the map to consider who the key users and stakeholders of your intranet are and, as it’s in a simple

I write so much crap without posting.. recently I’ve written a number of posts on my 3D adventures.. even “finished” at least one, but haven’t yet posted.. I guess I reread it and didn’t like it so much.. so now, its time for a new swing at writing such a post.. High end 3D, which is what I’m calling working with Cinema 3D Studio… is many orders of magnitude more complex then low end 3D.. or.. 3D I’ve done and explored in the past. These orders of magnitude give an almost oceanic feeling to t

Red and Green Lasers for a Techie Christmas Posted in Computers, Just Cool, reviews by Joe on the December 13th, 2008 Over the years, lasers have become more and more popular not only in science, but also for techie projects, music videos, and just playing around. So far, I’ve already reviewed the green laser that TechLasers sent me and the one I received from WarnLaser and later gave away to one lucky reader. This week, I [...] If you liked this Joe Tech article, subscribe to the RSS f

The Wide, Wide World of GPS Technology Posted in GPS by Tom Kelly on December 13th, 2008 by George Casuen The technology known as GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) was originally developed with military application in mind. Although it has filled this roll well over the last several years it is also becoming a staple of modern day society. Many commercial and personal applications of GPS technology have developed in the last decade and the list continues to grow and a quick pace. This is a p
