At Dislocate06, Hamilton, Southern, and St. Amand will present Running Stitch a project which explores how a track made with a GPS device changes our awareness and experience of place through the new vantage points and perspectives afforded by the use of satellite navigation. Visitors to the exhibition are given a GPS-enabled mobile phone to track their journeys through the city centre. I was goofing off with Google Maps the other day and was trying to find an address in the Speedway area of town. when I zoomed out a bit initially I immediately saw something familiar and not exactly out of place. It’s the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as seen from above, or from a satellite to be more exact. I thought it was really interesting to see everything like it is between races and just realize how much space it really takes up on the map. What an amazing facility to enjoy in our ci

I did go for cycling to Croydon yesterday, it took a lot longer than I planed/expected, but I hadn’t taken into account the mapping I would do on the way. At times I forgot I was on a certain road in order to get some road names, so had to suddenly stop and get my camera out. Other times I enjoyed just following the cycle route signs and whizzing down hills to catch up on time I had lost. I paused in Sutton to check the route I was taking when a passer-by asked me for directions. I had a good

I’ve been using CoPilot 7 for a couple of days. It’s a great application for GPS navigation on Windows Mobile devices. One big drawback for me is that it doesn’t have the ability to silence the voice without also turning down the master system volume. If I do this, then I can’t hear any other application that needs to make a noise. So I created my own silent voice. It consists of nothing but blank sound files for every bit of speech. This way, I can select the Silent voice in CoPilot, while l

(note to self) Mobhappy: Location-Based vs. Context-Aware Location is just a part of the context of each individual user In some cases, such as mapping, there isn’t a great need for context-awareness instead of location, but in many LBS instances, being sensitive to context is much more important than simply location Musings of a mobile marketer: Location Based Services - are they all missing the point? I can’t help thinking that many of the LBS initiatives are missing the point Twitter h

GOOD Magazine, in collaboration with Graham Roberts, maps the most famous journeys in history - some fiction, some non-fiction. Wanderlust includes trips like Around the World in 80 Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth to the voyages of Marco Polo and Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Late last week Google announced the release of a new Geolocation API for its Google Gears browser extension (our new Gears Geolocation API Profile). According to Google: The Gears Geolocation API provides a way to get a more precise estimate of a user’s location. MySpace in July: Best month ever? August 26th, 2008 Recently, statistics firms haven’t been too kind to MySpace, the News Corp.-owned social network that was at the center of Silicon Valley press love not so long ago. In June, ComScore reported that once-smaller Facebook had surpassed it in worldwide traffic for the first time. But the news isn’t all bad for MySpace, the company said in an e-mail Monday evening. ComScore statistics might be showing that Facebook is still growing rapidly, b

Toodledo helps manage your life in bite-size pieces August 25th, 2008 Earlier Monday one of my colleagues from Gamespot spent most of lunch gushing to me about his new favorite GTD tool. Called Toodledo, it’s diminutive name does not do its to-do list prowess justice–this is one of the most deep and full-featured offerings on the market. It’s also one of the easiest to get into, especially if you’re using other Web services like Google Calendar, Twitter, and Jott. At its heart Toodledo is

Glassdoor offering a look at salaries beyond the dollar August 26th, 2008 Look out multinational employers, Glassdoor.com is also going multinational. Glassdoor, a site that gives insider reports on salaries and the zeitgeists of more than 11,000 companies, plans to announce Tuesday that has added multi-currency information for more than 100 countries. Basically, that means a Google employee in the search company’s terribly cool offices in Zurich, Switzerland, can see salaries in the local

Mapping to Relational Databases - Patterns Posted by admin on August 25th, 2008 A big part in the role of the data source layer is talking to a database, most of the times a relational database. I have done some reading about how to implement this data source layer because it can become pretty messy in big projects. It’s also hard to refactor once a choice of pattern is made so it’s important to make the right choice from the beginning. For my current project I’ll look into some patterns, ide

The Mossberg Solution - WSJ.com by admin The Mossberg Solution - WSJ.com Now there’s a way to upload photos that are already labeled with their exact latitude and longitude using geotagging, the fancy name for labeling data with information on its geographic origin. Photos with “geotags” have coordinates embedded invisibly in them. Some programs or online photo services use these tags to generate maps showing just where each photo was taken, or to label or organize the images. Not long ago,
