Nick wrote earlier about the importance of better understanding how to help people connect at events, and the experiments that Shine Unconference is carrying out with The Social Network Company. I explored those possibilities further with organiser Jess Tyrrell, and Tom Alcott in this conversation.

We were asked recently to provide a solution for a large mobile advertising company which wanted to be able to: More effectively define, document, and sell their routes to customers Assure their customers of the time spent driving those routes Alert their staff to any infractions of vehicles leaving those routes GPS Insight now has a “Route Path Tool” which allows you to define a route, document that route, and quantify how much time and mileage was spent on that route. I had a recent conversation with an Industrial Engineer from a US-based HVAC company. He said that they had just completed an analysis of manufacturing errors. The result: 40% of errors came from design or manufacturing documentation problems. Let me repeat that: The root cause of 40% of manufacturing errors was design or manufacturing/design documentation. Many manufacturers are making significant investments in lean, continuous improvement, and quality programs to remain competitive. But wha

By Satta Sarmah On Wednesday, I was making the long trek from Chicago’s South Side to Evanston when an advertisement on the red line train grabbed my attention. The ad was for Rubloff, the nearly 80-year-old Chicago real estate company, which is attempting to modernize its business by offering potential buyers valuable information and services on its Web site. The content of the ad made me take notice. It mentioned something about an interactive map that also showed school statistic

i was reading some info that jason posted in the e-pistle about atlanta, mostly stuff i've already studied out but there was a blog that was talking about revival in the city of atlanta and how the Lord showed this guy a symbol --- an "X"--and "R&R", which stood for racism & religion as the two things that will make terminus, the spirit of death over the city of Atlanta, fall. he said that once we have day and night intercession from the northeast, northwest, central, southeast and south

It’s been slightly over a week since I moved into the new place and things are working out well so far. One of the major changes is that I haven’t had as much time to sit down and develop: instead, the roommates and myself tend to be more social in the community area. Unfortunately for the screaming fans of XenonMKV, though, this means I haven’t had a chance to deliver on some bug fixes and requested features. I hope to have something new by the end of the month on that end. On the technology

Portland-based Platial, one of the original social mapping applications and caretaker of more than 150 million geobits of information, has rolled out a new build of its application that promises to take a critical step forward in social mapping, moving from the ability “to plot points on a map” to the ability to have much deeper and meaningful experiences with locations and the people who love them. Spotplex can’t find its groove, forced to close May 10th, 2008 After over a year of operation, Spotplex is closing up shop, according to a message on their site. The company states that, “We regret to inform you that Spotplex is going offline. This was a very hard decision for us and we are sure you will miss the service as much as we do.” I wrote about Spotplex, back in November after having a conversation with their CEO, Doyon Kim (previously founded Dialpad, which sold to Yahoo 2005).

I’m going to start titling these posts “of the moment” considering when I get busy it might be more than a week between posts. IGN has a Interactive GTA IV Map, powered by Google Maps. Seems fitting, as Liberty City is modeled after a real world city with great GIS/mapping coverage, New York.

It is really easy to lose track of a character or a personality when writing a story. That means that your character Charles may migrate from being an architect on page 10, to being a guy that makes those plastic balls that go in the pits at the good McDonald's play places. You see what I mean? You need to remember the little details for all of your characters because, after spending hours, days, months with them, the details can get a bit hazy. The easiest way to do this is to write everything

Team up to take out telemarketers with Caller Complaints May 10th, 2008 Cold calls from telemarketers and other companies that ignore the do-not-call list are one of the banes of modern day civilization. A simple Google search for a mystery number you’ve received usually lets you know who’s on the other end before you have to pick it up. The problem is that cell phones don’t have the same quality of caller ID landlines get (numbers not names); so that call you’re getting could be somethin

With all the talk of virtual worlds, and Second Life in particular, its easy to forget that there is a real world out there that also beckons attention beyond our monitors. Actually, it would be nice to marry both the virtual and real worlds together, because then you can really get some interesting things happening. This has not been lost (forgive the geo-pun) on the founders of Geocaching.com who have recently released a software platform called WheriGo (pronounced Where-i-Go) that enables on

Netflix Watch Now: Missing too much popular content May 10th, 2008 March of the Penguins: the only movie in Netflix's top 100 that you can stream (Credit: CNET Networks) The “Watch Now” feature on Netflix is a great idea: instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows, available for instant streaming to your browser at the touch of a button. There’s just one big problem: despite an advertised library of over 8,000 titles, very few of them seem to be movies or TV shows that I want to w
