Where 2.0 preview: Whrrl shows the way May 10th, 2008 We’ve covered Whrrl, and several of its competitors, already on Webware, but with the Where 2.0 conference coming up next week, I thought it’d be interesting to dive into this product just a bit more, since it represents some very interesting trends that are central to the creation of location-aware apps. Whrrl is a fascinating project. The idea is that it tracks where you go, through your mobile phone, and makes that information av

The power of mind maps. Ever wondered how our mind segments thoughts in little pockets and somehow manages to form links and relationships with them in real time? Ever wondered how multi-dimensional relationships spark up and roll like a movie in our minds every time a thought is triggered. It’s amazing, and yet next to impossible to physically capture all of that information. Mind-mapping software options: Although its impossible to capture everything, people have tried to come up with so

Comparison shop on the fly with PriceAdvance May 9th, 2008 I love things that save me money when shopping online. While PriceGrabber and Google Shopping are my two go-to sites for finding the lowest prices on electronics, tons of sites track prices and give the heads-up when something goes on sale or gets its price reduced. There’s also PriceAdvance, a browser plug-in that will pull up competing prices from other online sellers automatically whenever you hit a page with a product and price

Facebook reported ready to lift 5,000-friends cap May 9th, 2008 If you’re among the fraction of Facebook users who have bumped up against the social-networking service’s 5,000-friends cap, breathe easy: you might well soon be able to climb into the upper reaches of four figures’ worth. That’s according to a Friday post on TechCrunch, where Michael Arrington reported that Facebook is getting ready to lift the limit. As Arrington wrote, there are only about 1,000 Facebook users–out of

Biomapping From Bio Mapping - Christian Nold (a graduate from our course) By recording our own body’s bio data along with our geographic location we can review the information and make meaningful decisions about our life. Furthermore those close to us both physically and socially may have a certain interest in how we interpret our environment. By allowing people to make active choices about how to share this intimate yet ambiguous data we not only create radically new social relations but

The Dutch like to live in new, modern homes with a garden front and back. This leaves the country with many a suburban jungle like the one depicted below. This also means steady jobs for surveyors with the commercial mapping companies – and many a free weekend spent mapping for a Dutch OpenStreetMap contributor. So, although the Netherlands got a huge boost in OpenStreetMap when AND donated its dataset for the Netherlands to the community last year, we need to continue our efforts to keep t

I have been doing a fair amount of EDI mapping on my latest gig, and I wanted to share a neat trick I figured out for mapping 856 Advanced Shipping Notice transactions. What makes an 856 special is that all of the action takes place in one looping segment that contains a number of child segments. The fun part is that you need to use a different subset of those child segments in each loop iteration. For example, the first iteration you need to map data to the PRF, DTM and N1 segments. The second

Google waves sayonara to Hello May 9th, 2008 Later, gator. Google has announced the shutdown of Hello, a sort of photo-messaging service that became part of the Mountain View family when Google acquired Picasa in 2004. “All good things come to an end,” a placeholder on the Hello.com home page says. “So it is with sadness that we say goodbye to Hello.” Guess they weren’t so sad that they felt the need to steer clear of goofy plays on words. Hello will fade away on May 15, though Google’s

Where to start? Well, the other week I happened to remember an article I heard about on the news about someone who wrote all of his thoughts down and organised them into maps and categories - like tracing all the paths in your head in order to make it easier to recall events and make decisions. One quick google search for “Write every thought” turned up results to Mr Lion Kimbro’s website:

Open source, open standards, open data - we’re using them all with the National Broadband Map. This isn’t out of an idealogical view point, it’s just that these tools are helping us achieve what we want to. Open Data The openness of the data is one area that we have already had an interest in for demand aggregation and other purposes. We are visualising the data using Google maps but this isn’t the only way the data can be used. We have a database API (application programming interface) which

Webjam offers Apple-like simplicity for site building May 9th, 2008 Earlier today I had a great demo with Webjam, a do-it-all publishing service that launched at the Le Web conference in late 2006. Like Ning (which picked up $60 million in funding last month), it lets users build pages out of various components without needing to know any coding. Th
