The most recent free street data that I have found is the StreetMap data (based on 2000 Tigerline data) that comes with an ArcView license. As you can imagine, this data is particularly ill-suited for geocoding addresses in areas that have experienced substantial new development in the last eight years. Luckily, I just found a great web application that allow you to obtain X/Y (latitude/longitude) coordinates based on street address. Better yet, it allows you to batch process the addresses that

Devin Balentina of The Nokia Guide spent 2 weeks earlier in the year, trekking across the planet as part of The Urbanista Diaries. During this time his route was charted on a widget that also displayed the photos he took along the way All fun and games, no?! Well, if you like the idea you can now get your hands on your very own widget to keep the world updated with where you are, and what you’ve been taking pictures of. Devin brings us this news himself, and despite the shortcomings in support

‘Something’s up’ at LinkedIn, per blog reports May 5th, 2008 Oh, Valley gossip: VentureBeat speculates we might soon hear about some big company buying business social network LinkedIn. The evidence? A board meeting that “went way over the scheduled time,” and sources who say “good news” is on the way. Even VentureBeat admits it’s a stretch, but asserts that “something’s up.” LinkedIn isn’t commenting. VentureBeat later added a note suggesting that the “good news” might be additional fundi

Lycos Cinema: “Needs more Battlestar” May 5th, 2008 Lycos today launched a social movie-watching site, Lycos Cinema. The idea is that you can invite your buddies to watch the movie you’re watching (synchronized almost frame-for-frame), and then chat with them about the show in an embedded window. I found it a surprisingly engaging experience. I fired up a movie and invited in some folks here, and the chat just picked up naturally. I could see this product being popular among kids.

Web 2.0 gets to work in Boston May 5th, 2008 Our buttoned-down and moneyed East Coast friends might want to check out the upcoming Enterprise 2.0 Conference from June 9 to 12 in Boston, where businesses wonks will be arguing about how to get real work done with Web tools. Like the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco last month, this conference will feature a Launchpad session that pits a few Web 2.0 companies against each other in rapid-fire pitches. Right now, the Conference is asking for

What Flash games are hot? Nonoba will show you May 5th, 2008 Gaming is one of the greatest uses of Flash technology. There are tons of places to get your Flash gaming on, and one of my new favorites is Nonoba. I found my way there earlier this morning from a link on Download Squad for a particularly fun game called Comboll that’s a cross between Breakout and a scrolling level of Super Mario Bros. The site offers the same communal experience of playing games with others as Kongregate does,

Google has already been good to Oceana, and now the online behemoth may be cooking up something else for the oceans. Reports have surfaced that Google is planning an underwater counterpart to its popular Google Earth maps: Google Ocean. The company is keeping mum for the moment, but a global 3-D database of seafloor terrain could be a boon to amateur oceanographers and scientists alike. Oceans may cover 71 percent of the world's surface, but very little is known about the seafloor. Most peopl

Lance A. Bettencourt and Anthony W. Ulwick have developed a method called “job mapping,” which breaks down the task the customer wants done into a series of discrete process steps. Authors think that this efficient yet simple method could help companies find new ways to innovate. Authors argue that by deconstructing a job from beginning to end, a company gains a complete view of all the points at which a customer might desire more help from a product or service – namely, at each step in the job

My work has a close relationship to landscape, but it is not a direct one. People often talk about a certain place and say something like, “It is so beautiful, you really can’t capture it in a photograph.” What is it that can’t be captured by a representational process like photography? What exists beyond the ocularcentric view? Some people look “on” or look “at” an object or landscape, but I am trying to look “into.” It’s like getting into the landscape and then viewing it from within. Co

I just came across an interesting blog, which presents a different spin on election dynamics, in the aftermath of the primary we just had here in Pennsylvania - Here, counties in blue represent larger wins for Hillary Clinton, whereas the green counties represent larger wins for Barack Obama... "Appalachia" is outlined in black. During the 1992 presidential campaign, Democratic political consultant James Carville described Pennsylvania as "Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with Alabama in between."
