Google has now incorporated StreetView images into driving directions. This is another practical application of the street-level photography. Earlier I wrote about its adoption by real-estate vertical Trulia and other “practical” implementations of StreetView. At many steps of the way StreetView images are available to “disambiguate” directions (camera icons indicate the availability of images). Here are some sample images for a hypothetical trip from the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley CA to the

Social blogging tool Profy goes beta with big plans for the future April 29th, 2008 At last week’s Web 2.0 Expo, one of the companies showing its wares was Profy, a blogging service I covered back in January. Back then, I was impressed with its vision, although not with its customization options, which fell short of what was offered on hosted blogging tools such as MovableType and WordPress. However, after meeting with Profy co-founder Svetlana Gladkova this morning, I’m beginning to see th

Google map directions get Street View April 29th, 2008 Google Maps directions now are augmented with Street View imagery, where it's available. (Credit: Google) Google has built its Street View into Google Maps’ ability to provide driving directions, the company said Tuesday. With the feature, a small camera icon appears next to the intersections in the turn-by-turn directions. Clicking on the icon brings up a view of the intersection so people can see the area in question. Google

Site created to share Live Mesh invites April 29th, 2008 After getting into the limited beta for Microsoft’s Live Mesh, blogger Long Zheng wanted to find a way to share the opportunity. It turns out that each person who gets added to the beta gets to invite a few others, by sharing files with them. “As soon as I got my own invite, I started thinking of the original ‘Gmail invite sharing’ Web site and began to build one for Live Mesh,” Zheng said on his Istartedsomething blog. “Thus,

I am trying out the Wordpress.com “Make this blog your personalized blog.com” domain mapping service with my personal domain: TimothyCohn.com Previously the TimothyCohn.com domain was hosted and parked at WhyPark.com. TimothyCohn.com at one time was in Google’s search engine results. However, like all short cuts - the WhyPark.com domain parking solution proved to be both: short and cut. I own TimothyCohn.com and haven’t changed the domain’s ownership during this trial. Only time will tell

The ‘TextCu.be’: Social network on a keychain? April 29th, 2008 If you’re becoming hopelessly addicted to Twitter or any other social network, then by all means stay away from this device. Called “TextCu.be“–being of Web 2.0 in nature, it obviously can’t have a normal spelling–this is a dedicated wireless receiver designed to get text messages from designated social networks. (Credit: TextCu.be) There’s just one question that immediately comes to mind: Why would anyone buy a device like t

My hosts were Hiroshi Miura from Openstreetmap.jp and the Kodeo (Little Edo) Linux User Group, a great group of people, professionals and enthusiasts. We met at the IPA (the IT Promotion Agency - a kind of governmental centre for promoting excellence in IT), near Sugamo. Hiroshi Miura, who recently has started openstreetmap.jp invited me to give a talk and demonstration about OpenStreetMap (slides)

RestyleMe lets you judge others and not feel guilty about it April 29th, 2008 As of two years ago People magazine was raking in a whopping $1.5 billion in revenue. Much of the magazine is photos of celebrities or other people of interest that others pay simply to flip through. One of the recurring (and most popular) features has celebrities wearing some of the worst clothing, picked out especially by the editors–usually with wonderfully snarky commentary. In the same spirit is RestyleMe, w

How to Texture-Map Triangles in a Canvas April 29th, 2008 Some who are curious as to how it was possible to achieve texture-mapping in an HTML5 canvas probably already took a peek at the code in the Wii Opera SDK only to see that it has been optimized into obfuscation. Thus, I’ve decided to write an article to explain the technique, starting with the basics. The triangle definition The triangles are defined in the same manner as they are in the flat shading part of the SDK and are fully c

April 29th, 2008 (Credit: Steve Guttenberg) Even hardcore audiophiles have to face the music–brick and mortar record stores are fading fast–and it’s starting to look like the CD is on its way out. Sure, no card carrying audiophile would be caught dead downloading MP3s or iTunes, the sonic sacrifices are too drastic. The late sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke famously said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. We certainly live in a magical world. We’re surrounded by technology, yet we seldom stop to consider the amazing advances that we’ve come to rely on every day. Whether we’re surfing the Web, making a call on our mobile phones, or watching a DVD movie on our big-screen TV, we take our modern conveniences for granted. Here, then, is a peek inside the magician’s hat at
