CONCEPT Situation Room is a term normally used to designate the place used in times of crisis to assess and monitor data for decision taking. Its origin can be traced back to World War II with the invention of computers, digitalization and the collaboration of architects and the military. These rooms are equipped with monitors and data boards used to control everything from the Strait of Gibraltar to the nuclear fission processes in a Nuclear Power Station or the life sustaining mechanisms on

I finally got around to writing and launching ‘i am near‘, a very simple application to show you ’stuff’ that you are near, in a format designed for mobile users. At the moment it’s only got pubs in it. Inspired by Simon Willison’s wikinear, it uses Fire Eagle to grab your location, storing your credentials in a cookie. The data is sourced from Open Street Map, which was the only useful source of pub data I could find. Fancy A Pint has a KML file, but it only contains ~2500 pubs, whereas there

I was given a tip that the search New York hotels on Google yielded major “mapspam.” Check this out (yikes): Apparently all these links have been hijacked by affiliate site Uppereast.com. San Francisco Hotels, Chicago Hotels and Seattle Hotels, by comparison, all look to be pretty clean and spam free.

If you want to test for an association between a genetic marker and a disease phenotype, and you want to test this genome wide, you need to test a lot of markers. To separate random association from true association, you need to correct for the number of tests you are doing, and the more tests you are doing the more extreme your test statistic needs to be before you consider it a signal rather than random noise. For a genome wide test, you will need about half a million tests, and that is a l

One of the joys of the Internet is that there are some really smart people who have access to a lot of data that can be combined in ingenious ways—and this very detailed examination of geography and voting trends in the Democratic race makes a fascinating argument. Overlaying the voting patterns of the Clinton/Obama race with a map of Appalachia, it’s quite clear that there’s a trend: Appalachian voters overwhelmingly support Clinton. That means something in terms of the upcoming contests. The

I now have an answer to the question on mapping class groups of Heegaard splitting I asked a few weeks ago. It appears that for any Heegaard splitting of the 3-torus, the exact sequence from the kernel to the MCG of the Heegaard splitting to the MCG of the 3-manifold does not split (i.e. there’s no homomorphism back from the MCG of the 3-manifold). In fact, there is no injection from the mapping class group of the 3-torus to and surface mapping class group by a Theorem of Farb and Masur [1]. (

SINGAPORE (Team Geared Up) - Google have announced the addition of global contours to their free mapping service. Very nice indeed, especially when combined with the satellite images. The above screenshor is of Lugnaquilla in Wicklow, Ireland. Now this is becoming a serious tool to plot adventure points of interest on. Mountain names would be spectacular. How do you get it? I’m in Hamburg for the launch of a new Greenpeace information layer as part of the Google Earth Outreach program. Rebecca Moore is presenting — she was among the folks who started the program last year in the US as a means to get non-profits, charities, and environmental groups using the Google Earth platform to promote their work — and the program has been successful enough that it now is expanding to Europe. Rebecca says: “Most people know Google Earth as a fun recreational tour. They
