I’ve recently facilitated a very brief SWOT workshop with a team of about 12 people or so. I generally am not a fan of SWOT - generates long lists of passive “mother hood and apple pie statements” rather than seeking out an activity based perspective on where real strategic advantage may lie. I have tho’ used SWOT analysis as a useful tool in analysing lessons learned in projects (what does this critical incident suggest about our strengths and weakness and thus what are the key opportunities

Reader Comments

I have read a few posts lately about people who would like to try to visualize their social networks. This is quite a feat to accomplish, seeing as many people’s networks include thousands of people. Although many people may not be able to complete such a task, there is a website that showcases people’s attempts to do so. If you want to check it out, it is VisualComplexity.com. There are some pretty cool ones, and I would recommend looking at the Digg Community and the Facebook Friend Wheel.I

A regular feature on this blog, here are the other blogs I subscribed to in March which I feel should be shared with the community: A VC - I have no interest in VC, but every now and then there’s interesting stuff on social media that I read and enjoy. Socialmedia.biz is a great site keeping up with social media in the business setting. I like Student Blog Project because the notion of using web2.0 in education is a curiosity of mine and I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon it on ping

Those are some smart folks over at Dubberly Design Office. I love their concept maps, which bring to life such ideas as A Model Of Brand (which hangs in my office), Information Loop, Innovation and Search. In an industry where words, concepts and theories are thrown around, sometimes it’s nice to be able to visualize an issue, especially a complex one. These maps tackle some intricate and fluid notions where getting people on the same team to agree on definitions can be tough. At the very lea

Script: Fit Text Frame to Content (Depth) April 1st, 2008 This week will be focused on scripts. I have an entire page devoted to those I have created and promote a few others that I find useful to my day-to-day design and cartography work in Adobe Illustrator (go there), especially as a former Freehand user. These scripts extend Adobe Illustrator’s basic functionality thru a cross-platform JavaScript language. I’ve updated my fitting script (today’s post) and Make Point Type (separate post)

After last year’s snowboarding GPS fun, I decided once again to carry a GPS for this year’s trip to St Anton, so I could keep a record of where we boarded. Using Rob’s, now slightly battered, Garmin Etrex Legend C, I set the GPS to record our location every 2 seconds and put it in my jacket pocket for the day. At the end of each day, I downloaded our traces from the GPS onto my laptop using GPSBabel, then at the end of the trip, loaded them all into Google Earth and munged them around a bit

Chris Harrison put together a series of Internet maps that show how cities are interconnected by router configuration. Similar to Aaron Koblin's Flight Patterns, Chris chose to map only the data, which makes an image that looks a lot like strands of silk stretched from city to city. With these maps, viewers gain a sense of connectivity in the world - and as expected the U.S. and Europe are a lot brighter than the rest. The Dimes Project provides several excellent data sets that describe the st

You simply must call and hear this important message - it will only take a couple of minutes. Alternately, or if you are hearing-impaired, you can get the vital news by firing up a terminal program and typing: telnet psyduck.timminstechnologies.com This might not work if your organization or ISP blocks the use of telnet (which they should not, but you never know). By the way, the call to the 248 number is charged as a regular toll call if you dial it in the normal way, but it’s a registe

(more…)

Well, here goes~ I'm not waiting until all is perfect. I'm taking action now! I am, by all measures, a maximizer- optimizer - sales & marketing muse for Interior Designers, Decorators, Entrepreneurs, and Solo-preneurs. I just uploaded 2 articles I have written and been passing around to my design clients. So here is my blog debut. I'm taking action- instead of waiting..., practicing..., studying..., and studying some more. As a teacher of goal achievement, even I know that ACTION is the w
