“It’s another installment of Entropist, a sci-fi culture column by futurist design maven Geoff Manaugh, author of BLDG BLOG. The British branch of Penguin Books recently premiered a new website called - a bit lamely - We Tell Stories. The basic idea is that six authors will tell six stories over a period of six weeks. More interesting, however, is the fact that story #1, “The 21 Steps” by Charles Cumming, was told using Google Maps. So combine this same strategy with today’s urban sci-fi, add a

In my NISO presentation I made a rather imperfect metaphorical point, which is that there is too much darkness (in the sense of "too little access to information") on this map. 1 billion of us have incredible (and some would claim overwhelming, or "too much") information access, and 5 billion of us do not. Wifi is something that should be ubiquitous so that our digital lifestyle may not be limited to being online at home or at work. It should include, bars, restaurants and city squares. In some cities wifi is easy to find but in others that’s not the case. The lazy way to do wifi mapping could be with the geo loc software on the n95, a flickr account and free wifi. Everytime you find free wifi, get the GPS co-ordinates, include them in the exif and upload them to twitter. Once that’s done get th

That type of belligerence might be coming to your car under the guise of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Many cars can already be had with the necessary hardware like GPS navigation systems that help a vehicle determine its position, and stability control that can already fire individual brakes to effect course corrections. Is the next step writing the software to interconnect those sys

“In a move to provide better data to its users, YouTube formally announced late Wednesday that it had added a free feature that will show video creators when and where viewers are watching their videos. A movie studio might run several versions of a trailer on YouTube to see what is catching on where, and if a humorous spot is catching fire in Texas, might start running that trailer as a TV ad in the state. A political campaign could test spots of a candidate discussing the environment or the

Snowboarding GPS foo After last year’s snowboarding GPS fun, I decided once again to carry a GPS for this year’s trip to St Anton, so I could keep a record of where we boarded. Using Rob’s, now slightly battered, Garmin Etrex Legend C, I set the GPS to record our location every 2 seconds and put it in my jacket pocket for the day. At the end of each day, I downloaded our traces from the GPS onto my laptop using GPSBabel, then at the end of the trip, loaded them all into Google Earth and mun

I’ve shared a number of tools that as a writer I’ve found helpful. Here’s another one that I discovered recently. I wish I could tell you how, but I can’t remember. I think I stumbled upon it following a link from some site talking about alternative software for the pocketbook challenged. Anywho, this particular software is called FreeMind. It is FREE, good news for those of us who find more lint in our wallet than purchase powering paper. Here’s how it’s described on it’s wiki page: FreeM

A coworker of mine recently asked me how he could get a printout of his files and folders. I replied “why are you asking me? I don’t freaking know” (In my defense, I have been out of Zoloft for a week) So as an apology, I did some research and found a program that will print out his crappy files and folders. The program is called JR Directory Printer and let’s you choose the directory and then sends the map of the folder/drive you specify to a notepad file from which you can then print. I beli

The weather affects how long it takes to travel from one place to the next, but I’m not aware of any mapping application that incorporates this fact. From what I can tell from a brief overview, the standard mapping applications seem to rely on relatively static estimations of expected speed limits and traffic for a given road. This seems a bit slow and out-of-date for the modern mobile world. How about an application that uses geo-tagged weather data to estimate driving conditions for a giv

If you can remember the movie The Blair Witch Project, this was before everyone use cell phones and of course way before anyone heard of portable GPS mapping systems.
