Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound it describes e.g. ‘Crash’ , ‘Miaow’ etc. and as such are possibly the origins of spoken languages being the simplest form of communication - imitating an object to communicate meaning ( for instance in Chinese ‘Mao’ 猫 has become the word for a cat, based [...]

Colin is a super smart colleague of mine, who works as a developer on the Entity Framework. So it is great to see him start a blog. His first post is super cool, because he discusses a set of extensions he put together that get around some of mapping limitations of the Entity Framework. He does this by writing a custom entity materializer. This custom materializer supports, arbitrary stored procs, multiple recordsets etc... all very cool. Here is a little snippet that illustrates what is

Made partly in a Generator.x 2.0 workshop, Andreas Nicolas Fischer’s ‘A week in the life’ is a three dimensional visualisation of movement and communication made with a cell phone during a week roaming around Berlin. Using bespoke software written for his mobile phone, Andreas was able to record the longitude and latitude of his position in the city. The data was then passed to a Processing sketch, which resulted in the 3D representation. WMMNA extracted the following info regarding the journey

For our journal club tomorrow we are reading yet another paper on gene-gene interaction in association mapping. This time, a rather short and easy paper: Exploration of gene-gene interaction effects using entropy-based methods Dong et al. European Journal of Human Genetics (2008) 16, 229–235; doi:10.1038/sj.ejhg.5201921 Abstract Gene–gene interaction may play important roles in complex disease studies, in which interaction effects coupled with single-gene effects are active. Many interacti

As i grow to love this software more and more, i find different things that can take away from the user experience. I have found that putting polygons on the screen(mostly zip code polygons) is expensive if you use oh about 250 or more. I am working on ways around this and we are figuring some things out. One reason why a polygon is expensive is that in flash a polygon is simple correct… yes correct. Zip Code polygons are a little troublesome because of the number of points. They have gre

In the summer of 2005 Garfield, NJ was selected as one of six cities in the nation to be part of the City Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Pilot Program, funded by Active Living Resource Center. The Garfield Health Department, in conjunction with the Nursing Program of Ramapo College, then began what was later named the Fitness, Unity, and Nutrition (F.U.N.) Group. The three factors of F.U.N. serve as the theme to build programs designed to both increase bikeability and walkability in Garfield,

Mind Mapping March 26th, 2008 Since I wasn’t able to make it to this month’s TASSQ meeting, I decided to post this in lieu of a monthly meeting update. Something I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks is using mind maps for doing session-based testing. Umm, what’s a mind map? Glad you asked! A mind map is a diagram that shows your thought process. It’s something that you kind of have to get used to doing, since there’s no fantastic machine to read your thoughts, but personally I fo

Thanks to some great work (and a fortuitous accident) from the good people at Kinene.net, it’s now possible to use moving images as Displacement Maps in a GLSL Vertex Shader in QC. So I thought I’d give it a go.

Once again news organisations will be looking over their shoulder at the launch of MetaCarta’s news mapping service. The more I play with this, the better I like it. The red page icons on the opening page are something of a red herring - those are just the main headlines. A search for “Birmingham” brings up a whole lot more from my home town (and interestingly, not Birmingham, Alabama, meaning the site has worked out where I am). Perhaps more interestingly, a keyword search gives you a glo

Marchex’s Matt McGee has a brief interview with Brian Gil of Yahoo! about “mapspam” arising out of the open editing capability in Yahoo! Local, which has been the policy for almost two years. Google recently adopted the same capability. As I originally stated and suspected, Gil says that spam or other mischief hasn’t been a problem and that the reported issues with affiliates and hotels is a unique case: “We haven’t seen what I would categorize as significant abuse issues. I’m not going to

Want to rewire your brain? Then you’ve gotta’ move. Nogo A is an inhibitory protein that prevents neuron growth when it interacts with the Nogo-66 receptor site. Exercise increases neuroplasticity by down-regulating the production of the Nogo A protein, thus enhancing the brain’s ability to re-map itself. Cortical re-mapping allows the brain to reorganize [...]

The internet has created some really great tools to collaborate and bring us all closer together. As I was speaking with Steve Rothwell about MindManager 7 today over Skype in his office in England, I was reflecting on just how great it is to be able to reach out to the greater MindManager Community. While I was familiar with Steve's blog and his posts it was wonderful getting to speak with Steve firsthand and find out how he is using MindManager in the consulting work that he doing. And just th
