We started a concept/mind map in class (Tuesday/Wednesday) that needs to be completed for homework (due Thursday/Friday). The map covers Volcanic Activity and uses concepts and vocabulary from sections 4 and 5 of chapter 11. The words that should be included in the concept map are listed after the jump. One of the Popernicks’ first recommendations is to map the value stream. Following their advise I’m working my way through Learning to See.The question is, how do I apply the principles to Software Development. The Value Stream Maps are focused on assembly lines, where materials are working there way through concurrent processes. Raw materials are taken through a series of parallel value adding transformations to produce an end product.I don’t see immediately how this applies to the code I wor

This time, we’re actually talking about an iPhone exclusive app, since GeoPedia needs a network signal in order to provide positioning. GeoPedia takes advantage of the iPhone’s geographic positioning functionality via Google Maps My Location (available starting with firmware v1.1.3) to display Wikipedia articles relevant to one’s current position. The third party app sounds like one of the best, if not the best intended with the iPhone so far, keeping in mind however that users are required t

Let's bring on the screenshots now! ~continued next post~ Btw, I just copy the links from my photobucket, so it's just a random mix allowed to post

Personal Tracking March 25, 2008 – 18:27 For some time now, since I started doing some solo backpacks in fact, I’ve been keeping an eye on the available technology for personal tracking. Having very little knowledge or experience of portable electronics doesn’t help at all, and getting to grips with all this is uphill work. After much investigation and internet fatigue I gave up on a feasible solution a while ago, but the SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker is a very interesting development and it

Quite a few years ago I wrote an overview article on the use of sound for representing geographic data, including a series of sound variables for mapping I developed. The article was titled “Sound and Geographic Visualization” and was published as a chapter in the now out-of-print book Visualization in Modern Cartography (MacEachren & Taylor eds., 1994). Sound is used to convey information all the time, but less so in the realm of mapping where the visual dominates. The article explores

Few people around Africa, or the world, are unaware of the injustices being perpetrated against Zimbabweans by their government. It has gone from being the “bread basket of Africa” to a place of staggering inflation and a broken economy. Through it all, there are a few voices online that help bring the real stories of what is happening there to the world. One of those voices is Sokwanele (which means “enough is enough”), an excellent resource for background and news. Just recently they posted

I’ve spent quite a bit of time over the Easter holiday talking with friends and family about the economy and how they are dealing with the budget crunch we are all experiencing. One of the common threads of all these conversations has been the need to stay close to home, combine shopping trips and calling ahead so you don’t waste time and fuel going to multiple stores. More and more people are scaling back vacations and long car rides to try and save money. The next logical question is how p

A map translates spatial positions into an at least two–dimensional layer by means of a virtual (assumed/ agreed) coordinate–system. Thereby fixed points (locations) and lines of movement (paths/ roads) are recorded that result in a network which makes experience (orientation) possible. But maps also can be read in a negative way: due to its extension the un-space between the lines of movement can be interpreted as “space” that possibly hides points, traces of movement and experiences left be

Potential in light of the collaborative lexicon, by Benjamin Bailey. Not only are new and general revolutions in communications technology changing social dynamics as a structure for reference – over business education or leisure, but the effects on individual visualisation in memory reference and in comprehension of one’s surroundings are also being profoundly changed. Such new modes of comprihension and understanding, when referenced through multidimensional collaboration, can easily be fe

I’ve been a big fan of HDR photography but never really took the time to try it out myself. So after successfully testing out the photomatix pro for mac , I was able to fiddle around with the HDR/tonal mapping settings and its pretty funky. I used this image as a test which was shot sometime last year at the don valley brickworks visit with DVST8. The image shown below was not edited in photoshop but in photomatix pro alone without any use of sharpening filters, etc. Here’s the image. Note the

The Stanford Tree is f*ing hysterical dancing, btw. We could not stop laughing watching him! After the games, we went out for one of our friends bdays and i kicked butt at ai
