The Progressive Studies Project has produced an awesome interactive map of the world of progressive politics. It is done with “The Brain” software where each “thought/idea” is linked to related thoughts. So, for instance, Barack Obama is linked to Obama Campaign 2008, Obama Campaign Literature, Trinity United Church of Christ, Harvard Law School Alumni, African-American Democrats, Progressive Community Organizers, etc. or the thought/idea Progressive Strategy Types is linked to Progressive Ele

Virtual maps of the media attention given to different countries by newspapers such as La Croix, The Sun and The Economist, as well as the blogosphere. Created by Nicolas Kayser-Bril, you can find hi-res versions at L'observatoire des medias. Kayser-Brill notes trends: First, traditional newspapers are highly selective in their coverage of world news. Looking at the three British dailies, editors favour countries that are bigger and more populous, but also closer to home and better developed

I have web application (on Windows IIS server) that creates EDI 210 XML based on user inputs and transmits it to our OTM Application server (HP Server) using
[HTTPPOST] on port 80. My question is could this be sent over SSL on port 443 to secure this information from my web application to OTM Application server? What setup or configuration do we need to do on OTM Application server? Thanks.

Mapping and geosearch infrastructure provider MetaCarta has launched GeoSearch news, which locates news stories on a map. One can search by keyword or browse by category in a location. Here’s the press release and more from CNET. There are a variety of other sites that seek to “visualize” news feeds. YourStreet, a MetaCarta client, and Everyblock do similar things in putting news on a map. MetaCarta is serious about this as a consumer destination. But before there can be much traffic or a

Read or click? March 24th, 2008 During a summer internship at a major oil company in Norway, I was given a small task of rearranging the departments shared server disk. I started sketching and soon was able to categorize the content to be fairly structured. I then proceeded to ask the other employees of their opinions. The interesting thing I discovered was that those above 45 tended to want a wider file structure, and hence preferred to read through a larger amount of filenames, as opposed

Mike Blumenthal sent me a note this morning about a post showing the introduction of additional local links in Google search results — the so-called “10 pack” — has helped boost Maps traffic. From Mike’s post: This morning, Heather Hopkins [of Hitwise] has provided me with updated Google Maps traffic figures that confirm a roughly 21% upswing in Map’s traffic over the past 2 months since the official Janaury 23rd introduction of the Local 10 Pack What this means is that people are in fact

One of my new favorite open source applications is a Java based mind-mapping software called FreeMind. In case you haven’t noticed I frequently entertain various random thoughts that sometimes, albeit rarely, stem from a common point of interest. The difficulty lies in organizing these thought patterns or “blueprints” of ideas into a meaningful concept and then describing this concept to another individual. Not that I have any, but when dealing with complex, multifactorial concepts it is ve

As someone who values the probative value of a DNA profile, I like to see statistical methods used properly. We in the forensic community value the work of the many geneticists who deduced the independence of loci through years of recombination mapping. This is why I’m pained by the efforts of some to make insinuations through linear regressions without statistical due course.

These don’t seem to be posted weekly. I think I might need to retitle this “map of whenever”. Anyway… The Fuller Projection, also known as the Dymaxion Map, is a global map projection created by R. Buckminster Fuller. Projecting the Earth on to a flattened icosahedron (a Platonic solid) produces a map where the major land masses are presented as being relatively contiguous and with minimal distortion. The Earth’s oceans are sacrificed on this map, as the icosahedron is split on ocean-only edge

I purport no expertise in web-marketing particularly because I find the concept abstract and a voodoo/pseudo-science of sorts. From my perspective, it’s in the same realm as astrology. Both make for interesting stories. What works here may not work there… for reasons that usually escape me completely. It’s all very emotional which by nature makes it unpredictable and subject to interpretation. Some of my experience has been applying web marketing concepts that others have developed. I’ll avoid

I’m working on a mashup of Google’s traffic overlay and the cameras and reporting from NJ Commuter. You should check it out. You can pan around and view Google’s taffic info and click on markers that will bring up the camera view at that location. I’m planning on adding point-incident data, if I can easily grab it from somewhere.

What's the easiest way of generating a map similar to this? I have several state-level data series I want to display on maps of India. I assume this blank map of India in SVG format is a good starting-point. Now, what program(s) do I use to link areas on the map to my data series and hence automatically shade states by a variable x? My data looks like: [state code] state x [jm] jam 1.93386 [hp] him 1.74945 [pj] pun 1.90247 [uc] utt 2.13038 ... 33 more states ... I have Windows, St

Quick props to my friend Kirsten Palm who's new book, The Straits, was just published by Palm Press. Kirsten is a Detroit native who now lives in San Francisco. The book is two narrative essays on her hometown. The jacket copy reads: In The Straits, Kristin Palm presents us with a portrait of the mythological city of Detroit. By tracing its construction and destruction, Palm invokes the glory and tragedy of America in the 20th century. Among Palm’s lyric narrative of the names and places, th
