Laser mapping of Devil’s Sinkhole The Devil’s Sinkhole near San Antonio is a 400-foot deep, huge hole in the ground. It’s home to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats in the spring, and it spreads out into a series of caves like Swiss cheese. Visitors can’t go into the cave but thanks to a group of scientists and their high tech computers, scanners and lasers, they will soon be able to take a virtual tour of the cave. A group of elite cavers, biologists and geologists are mapping the insid

Yo, Jack here. Everyone's been asking where I have been for the last week. I've been busy with a personal project this week, and I also took a small vacation due to spring break. We went camping and I may or may not have woken up with a desert fox in my tent. Also, a friend of mine has also been using my steam account to play Portal, so my account has been in offline mode the past few days to avoid shutdown. Map updates and map removal threads this week, I promise. Hopefully no one w

No one said that going back to study would be easy and I certainly wouldn’t describe myself as an academic. I wouldn’t even say that I can write a successful academic paper but have managed to get through my classes by the skin of my teeth. The challenge of study rocked my world when I was trying to make sense out of Immanuel Kant, Karl Barth, Emil Brunner and Friedrich Schleiermacher. Things started to come together, however when I began to feel frustrated by by the lack of time on my han

Displaying a Trail in a Google Map with KML Written by hp on March 23, 2008 – 9:05 am - This is sort of Part 2 on displaying trails (line segments) in a Map. Earlier this week we discussed the paper below in our association mapping journal club. Lately we have been interested in epistasis (gene-gene interaction) in the context of association mapping — we have just submitted a paper on the subject and have a few projects in the pipeline working on this problem — and one problem that concerns us is the power of detecting gene-gene interaction in association mapping. This paper turned out not to really be about that, but it was interesting nonetheless.

The frequency and modulation of color as a map between us all. Relationships happen during the union of two or more discrete entities. Polychromatic unions are everywhere and we process them hourly, subconsciously. A twenty-four hour change of hue never ends in the sky, a further relationship of a looker on the planet gazing at the stars and ether out beyond the clouds. There are many times when monochromatics appear best in a given situation and there are times where two or three distinct hue
