... is not software-based. We seem to be putting too much emphasis in gaining intelligence through technology rather than through engaging human beings in the process. Too much software is making us stupid. See my earlier post Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Stupidity for more on that by Nova Spivak. To better illustrate my point, here's a concluding paragraph from a "Lessons Learned" report by the commanders of Task Force Dragon who just finished a Human Terrain Mapping assignment in a

The front cover of The Cailano Review 2-50 “Artifice & Intelligence” is graced by a work by Vancouver-based artist Antonia Hirsch, called “Average Country.” As Sharla Sava notes, in her essay “Gridlock: Antonia Hirsch’s World Map Project”: Online technologies have turned us all into potential cartographers. The digital collection and searchable database, NationMaster, for instance, provides an array of world maps based on statistical data. In a matter of seconds (and without paying a fee!) I ca

Remotely sensed data are particularly efficient for environmental mapping in order to outline major environmental types. Multiple schemes of image classification used in environmental mapping are either traditionally statistical or heuristic. While the former methods do not take account of spati

As I have written in a previous blog, I am not very pleased with the integrated GPS on the new Toughbooks. However, the Bluetooth is very stable and opens up a variety of GPS options. The following goes through the steps of setting up an external GPS on a Toughbook 19 running Windows XP Tablet. Other models should be similar; Vista has not been tested. 1) Turn on the GPS.
