Yes folks, it's that time of year, where I poke and prod all my proof sheets, put on my thinking cap and start the annual round of gallery applications, [starting with the CCP] . This year, it's the maps series. Having found a commercial scanner that scans the way I want format bit depth and with a good quality scanner, I'll be able to afford a whole series of high end scans, which I'll then then print as I can afford them. But first, a basic edit of the low rez scans, on my work's Epson 1680,

I use Mind Map on my Mac but not as yet at my current workplace. I'll be interested to see if there are any insights that Dan has and be sure to post them in due course. I'm also reading an article on trust and as a knowledge manager, this is an area that I examined in my thesis and has been a subject of

Although a variety of neuroimaging and mapping techniques have been implemented to better understand language processing at the level of the auditory cortex, much is unknown regarding how and by what pathways these structures interact during essential tasks such as sentence comprehension. In this study, the effective and structural connectivity at the level of the auditory

Not sure I’ll ever use this one ‘in anger’ but it’s an interesting test. I’m glad the lighting works so well, too. The base colour comes from the normal map, incidentally. The final screenshot shows the mesh from the back. Not quite sure why it looks so different from that side… Next I have to work out

Thought I’d have a go using the Normal Map code from the last post to do some bump-mapping. Turns out it’s quite easy to use the output of the Normal Map CIFilter as normals in a Fragment Shader. All that needs to be done is to transform it into the correct range by multiplying the RGB value of each pixel by 2.0, then subtracting 1.0. Some examples using a simple Phong lighting model, and normals extracted from first a static image, then the live video from the iSight camera, run through the

I’ve shared a number of tools that as a writer I’ve found helpful. Here’s another one that I discovered recently. I wish I could tell you how, but I can’t remember. I think I stumbled upon it following a link from some site talking about alternative software for the pocketbook challenged. Anywho, this particular software is called FreeMind. It is FREE, good news for those of us who find more lint in our wallet than purchase powering paper. Here’s how it’s described on it’s wiki page: FreeM

A coworker of mine recently asked me how he could get a printout of his files and folders. I replied “why are you asking me? I don’t freaking know” (In my defense, I have been out of Zoloft for a week) So as an apology, I did some research and found a program that will print out his crappy files and folders. The program is called JR Directory Printer and let’s you choose the directory and then sends the map of the folder/drive you specify to a notepad file from which you can then print. I beli

Inspired by Angelo Pesce’s comment here, I decided this morning I’d have a go at generating a Normal Map from a live video input, using a CIFilter patch. The code is surprisingly simple. /////////////////////////// //// FUNCTIONS //// /////////////////////////// /* Function to calculate the luminosity of a pixel */ float luminosity(vec4 color) { vec4 lumcoeff = vec4(0.299,0.587,0.114,0.0); return dot(color, lumcoeff); } /* Creates Normal Map for use in Displacement Map / Height Map GLSL shade

The weather affects how long it takes to travel from one place to the next, but I’m not aware of any mapping application that incorporates this fact. From what I can tell from a brief overview, the standard mapping applications seem to rely on relatively static estimations of expected speed limits and traffic for a given road. This seems a bit slow and out-of-date for the modern mobile world. How about an application that uses geo-tagged weather data to estimate driving conditions for a giv

Roald Forsberg sent me this link: Study Finds Wide Range of Rare Mutations Linked to Schizophrenia. It is a summary of the paper Rare Structural Variants Disrupt Multiple Genes in Neurodevelopmental Pathways in Schizophrenia Walsh et al. Science DOI: 10.1126/science.1155174. I haven’t read the paper yet, but I should. According to the GenomeWeb link, the study shows that schizophrenia associates with an enhancement of rare mutations. This is interesting, since the association mapping appro

If you can remember the movie The Blair Witch Project, this was before everyone use cell phones and of course way before anyone heard of portable GPS mapping systems. Can you imagine how Hollywood would have suffered if the portable GPS Mapping systems had been invented years earlier. Think about the countless scripts that the mainstream acceptance of the portable GPS mapping systems has probably caused to be rejected. Today, could really three college students still get lost in the woods

Karen Kliegman wants her students at Searingtown School, in Albertson, New York, to view themselves as docents — knowledgeable guides who can lead their class along the route of a famous seventeenth-century explorer. And she has found the technology to make this possible. She assigns each of her fourth-grade students an explorer to research — Columbus, Magellan, Ponce de Leon, or one of their questing contemporaries. After gathering facts, students locate images of the explorer or draw their own

In the third and fourth screenshots, I’ve swapped the Blending Mode of the mesh. I like the ethereal look of these. The downside is, it’s much more difficult to discern the 3-dimensional form of the mesh. I may try adding some kind of fog-like effect, so that the mesh colour or alpha changes with the z-coordinate of each fragment. This may help things look more 3D (and is something I’ve been meaning to try, anyway).

It's a reasonably safe bet that all Entity Framework (EF) and LINQ to SQL projects start with an existing database as the persistence store. The ADO.NET Team initially planned to support generating the underlying database schema from domain objects created in the EDM Designer's UI. This goal for v1 was abandoned early in EF's history, although the EDM Wizard retains the option to start with an Empty Model template. Unless appropriate stored procedures (sprocs) already exist for populating Enti

This is a great application from Martijn - it’s a style editor for Mapnik - one of the renderers used to render Openstreetmap data. It goes a long way to helping differentiate the map from the data, as I discussed in this post “a manifesto?“. OpenStreetMap’s power is the data. It also shows the flexibility of mapnik, and the Freedom in being able to have the map you want.

I am working on an outbound implementation. The company that is very dependent on its current geographical map drawing software when routing freight. Being that OTM’s mapping functionality is weak, I wanted to see if anyone was aware of OTM users that are integrating an external mapping software with OTM. I'm thinking that something like this would help in verifying that the routes built by the OTM Bulk Plans are geographically feasible. For example, a transportation planner might want to verify
