Geolocalization, Geolocalisation, Geolocation? February 27th, 2008 ’“”’’ For a while I’ve been wondering which one (if any) of these terms is proper english. The first two ones appeal to French speakers like I am (the French word being “Géolocalisation”), but it turns out they’re as far from Shakespeare’s language as it could get. On the other hand, the third one, Geolocation, is designated by Google, and therefore by the Wisdom of the Crowds, as the proper one Here at MapMyGlobe, we

Carleton University cybercartographer Fraser Taylor and his colleagues have already developed multimedia maps and atlases that use sound, music, photos and artwork to convey information about places such as Antarctica and the Arctic. Now he and doctoral student Tracey Lauriault are working on maps with scents. ... Ms. Lauriault is developing a scented digital map for the Bytowne Museum in Ottawa. She is considering, for example, using the smell of sawdust to help convey the importance of lumb

I'm sorry that I have been so scarce lately. This last week has been extremely trying... between school, a new job, issues with my cable connection, issues with my now-ex-girlfriend, and subsequent heavy drinking because of said issues with my now-ex-girlfriend.... I'm beat. But now that my rather hefty hangover has lifted and I'm finding myself with a remarkable plethora of time again, I will return to form in short order. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a paper to write about politicall

I’ve just used a spanish term - mapping - because it was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw these virtual interactive plans. “mapping” is actually a technical term we use in architecture when we organise information of all kinds - some times the most ludicrous and arbitrary - and shape it into a map that helps us understand better our own project. generally, we would take conditions of the surroundings - physical, social, irrelevant… - and through a whole system of organization we

The network as a model of both cultural creation and organisation retains a growing influence outside the Web, as is evident in Sharla Sava’s review of recent work by THR 2-50’s featured artist, Antonia Hirsch. Hirsch’s inventive reconstructions of cartographic information exemplify the visually abstract nature of modern knowledge, discovering in it a wealth of creative patterns and image relations – many of them as politically informative as they are aesthetically pleasing. SHARLA SAVA is a w

Last week’s imagery update in Google Earth was just rolled out in Google Maps, reports Google Maps Mania. The update includes Martin County, which is the first time in, without exaggeration, 83 years that Google has brought new aerial imagery to my area down in southeast Florida. See the full list of updates at the Google LatLong blog. Unfortunately, Google’s aerial coverage still trails in Palm Beach County, particularly given Microsoft’s introduction of oblique coverage of the entire county l

Maps and cartography are not particularly popular as song themes. But there is the Longitude and Latitude Song (MP3 file here). Careful or you’ll be singing this one out loud in your cubicle. Performed by Tom Glazer and Dottie Evans, and written by Hy Zaret, the song is one of a series of sciency tunes, aimed to inspire Sputnik-era kiddies, on the Space Songs album, recorded in 1959. Jeff Poskanzer’s terrific Singing Science web page has all the tracks from Space Songs, as well as the t

This blog is intended as a self-pedagogical tool for the research and development of my CEP Senior Project. I’m using it to document my research process and provide myself with a tool to engage in critical self-reflexion. Also, to share that process with you, gentle reader. Premise of my project: Maps serve to organize our conceptions of space and the relations within space, between socio-political structures and the environment. As informational tools, they serve to structure our thoughts, c

For a while I’ve been wanting to write a bit about my approach to association mapping, but I’d like to put it into a larger perspective, so I will instead write about how “local genealogies” can be used. This is a large topic, so I will split it into several posts over the coming weeks. At the end, I might collect it all in a small booklet, if there is interest for that. This is the first part of the series, and I’ll use it to introduce and motivate the use of local genealogies. Single marker

Scripps-owned US newspaper the Rocky Mountain News has created an online map of its news, business and sports features to give readers a better sense of where news is happening. “We created the feature because we thought users might be interested in where news occurs. Oftentimes in metro areas, a street address means nothing. Map My News brings home how close news is happening,” Mike Noe, the paper’s interactive editor, told Journalism.co.uk. Noe said there are plans afoot to connect the arch

AcuInvoice Domain Mapping Updates February 27, 2008 Last night we applied some updates to the manner in which domain mapping behaves. If you have pointed yourdomain.com (or billing.yourdomain.com) to your AcuInvoice account, the following summarizes the manner in which invoice URLs and payment processing now occurs. These changes provide flexibility in branding your AcuInvoice account without sacrificing security as it pertains to sensitive data. Invoices Sent From Mapped Domains If you are

It's that time again! Join Jamie Nast on April 21-22, 2008 for a fun-filled two days of learning at The Palm Beach Hotel which is conveniently located 2 blocks from the beach and surrounded by restaurants. This Spring's class is part of a larger 5-day instructor certification course. Today, just for a bit of fun, I've decided to set up a little social media experiment. I'm asking people in the UK to send me their postcode and a short description of their experience of the earthquake. I'm uploading these onto a Google map to try to get a picture of the range of the earthquake. You can view the map here. If you want to participate you can send an email to earthquakemap@hotmail.co.uk.

The good news is this morning I found out I was approved to use the Sun Grid Engine (I am not a terrorist after all) so I’m potentially going to be able to run blat jobs on thousands of cpus and wait only a half hour (according to

Road Trip Planning For an Enjoyable Trip My family just loves to travel. We take several vacations every year, and we go on short weekend getaways whenever we can. Because there are four of us, we usually drive to our chosen destinations in order to save money. Even with gasoline prices being as high as they are now, driving is still much cheaper than paying full airfare for everyone. This situation is not as much of a hassle as it might seem, especially since we have a nice minivan wi

I had to leave my car at the dealership to have some work done. I took a cab out from and to the dealership when I dropped off and picked up my car. Both times, I was surprised with the route taken. People perform wayfinding and route calculation when driving or walking a neighborhood by using landmarks. Some of those landmarks are the streets themselves; wider streets are not only significant features, they also act as conduits for more traffic. It usually doesn’t hurt that those significant s
