Google Tech Talks March 27, 2007 ABSTRACT Classical texture mapping involves associating a single texture map with each polygon of a 3D scene. The pixels in this map are rendered onto the projection of the polygon in the rendered image, for every image generated of the scene. Consequently, for some viewpoints, the distortion of the texture map when projected to the image may produce results which are visually inferior. Moreover, the preparation of such texture maps, obtained by cutting pi

I wouldn’t be surprised if “Who is Sick” is in some way related to Google Health being rolled out in a very limited way - I don’t know if there is a direct connection or not. I heard about “Who is Sick” from a blog called In These Times in a post titled The New Cartographers -What does it mean to map everything all the time? One of the keys to tapping the systematic generation of referrals is to identify and address the customer touch points that add up to lead a customer to the logical and emotional decision that your organization is referable. Today, just for a bit of fun, I've decided to set up a little social media experiment. I'm asking people in the UK to send me their postcode and a short description of their experience of the earthquake. I'm uploading these onto a Google map to try to get a picture of the range of the earthquake. You can view the map here. If you want to participate you can send an email to earthquakemap@hotmail.co.uk.

really wiped but some good news February 27th, 2008 today I’m really wiped… I was all day long in front of the computer (just like any other day…) but I think I’ve accumulated some fatigue lately by staying up late and working crazy days, now I have a huge headache. The good news is this morning I found out I was approved to use the Sun Grid Engine (I am not a terrorist after all) so I’m potentially going to be able to run blat jobs on thousands of cpus and wait only a half hour (according to

Road Trip Planning For an Enjoyable Trip My family just loves to travel. We take several vacations every year, and we go on short weekend getaways whenever we can. Because there are four of us, we usually drive to our chosen destinations in order to save money. Even with gasoline prices being as high as they are now, driving is still much cheaper than paying full airfare for everyone. This situation is not as much of a hassle as it might seem, especially since we have a nice minivan wi

I had to leave my car at the dealership to have some work done. I took a cab out from and to the dealership when I dropped off and picked up my car. Both times, I was surprised with the route taken. People perform wayfinding and route calculation when driving or walking a neighborhood by using landmarks. Some of those landmarks are the streets themselves; wider streets are not only significant features, they also act as conduits for more traffic. It usually doesn’t hurt that those significant s

During the visit to Turin, I had an opportunity to experience the consequences of address matching and georeferencing which I’ve noted in the entry ‘British Museum Test’. After touring the city, I needed to get to a restaurant to meet colleagues that were staying in the Institute for Scientific Interchange (ISI) in Turin. The meeting place was the ‘Il Porto di Savona’ restaurant in Piazza Vittorio Veneto 2. Since the hotel room was connected to the Internet through a relatively slow ‘Swisscom

Come to Bradford, West Yorks, tomorrow for OpenStreetMap’s first ever Mapping Pub Crawl, courtesy of the West Yorkshire Linux User Group. It will be very casual, and informal, no GPS needed. From the email: We will rendevous at the following locations and times: 6.00 p.m. ‘The Cock and Bottle’ BD3 9AA 7.00 p.m. ‘The Beehive’ BD1 3AA 8.00 p.m. ‘The Fighting Cock’ BD7 1JE The idea is to plug a hole the map, and get fairly inebriated at the same time. It’s entirely informal, with no plan

Yesterday we posted a blog about the international fiber cuts a few weeks ago. While I am interested in the geography of fiber and failures in general, we thought it would be a good opportunity to put Google MyMaps through its paces for creating a substantive data driven map. After 25 or so hours of collective labor I thought it would be useful to give the postmortem on our experience. While there are many positive qualities to Google MyMaps the biggest complaint is that we spent 40 hours muc

Yes, please shoot me for that horrid Saturday morning cartoon pun. Much in common with the difficulty I have in coming up with a topic for the blog, I have been having a difficult time thinking of a game for the Time Mapping project. I was thinking of Megaman since it is one of my favorites, but a game like Megaman only makes the project that much more difficult since the game is so varied on a micro scale. On the macro scale, there is the definite stages of: Select Stage, Fight through Stage

One of the really neat features of Google Maps that I use quite often is the ability to alter driving directions if you don’t like the given results. I’ve just written up my recent trip to the UK on my R1200GS and one of the features of the site is having a map displaying the route for the trip. Doing a simple driving directions gives the basic route that I took but it doesn’t include the wrong turns and deviations that I made. In Google Earth the only way to change a given route is to manua

Hello all, We had migrated a production systems from 5.0 windows version to 5.5 cu4 LINUX one, migrating also DB. Migration go well and OTM work fine but we have a problem using external systems, in windows version we had used external systems with xls translation to export and re-import in the OTM data related to shipment and order base, adding special information in special place, for instance we use to add delivered events and pickup events in automatic way. TO do this we had configured

"Interesting article" on Slashdot today about navigation mapping errors. The original article the author references is mainly about an errors in the navigation maps that leads drivers to a dead end road. Which if you want the news, is reported in the UK about once every three days. Branching off of that, the author seems to be frustrated there is no open mapping in the US where maps can be compiled by users. There is Open Street Map that is doing just that. And the Tiger data is free to

[blog.clickz.com] "The cynic in me isn’t surprised that Microsoft’s got a long line of agencies waiting to test this stuff, since it justifies spending more money on ads with crap click-through and conversion rates even when the real purchases are coming from a keyword buy on a competitor’s search engine [keywords]. But the basic argument -- some people see an ad and then decide to act later -- seems sound. I just don’t know what proportion of users do this
