“One of the basic situationist practices is the dérive [literally: “drifting”], a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances. Dérives involve playful-constructive behavior and awareness of psychogeographical effects, and are thus quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll.” Theory of the Dérive by Guy-Ernest Debord One of many goals of the dérive is to attempt to look at the city as a special instance of repressed desires. If George can anoint himself “The Decider” then I can confidently take the title of “The Predictor”. I was just crowned (literally, I have the tiara to prove it) 2008 Visionary Of The Year by Unlimited Potential. Which is pretty impressive, considering it happened in the first month of 2008. It was another fun event and my fellow predictors had plenty of prescient and witty insights. Hopefully UP will post all the predictions somewhere. The following is my outlook on the year to come. Last year I wished some Vietnamese web services to be listed in the Web Trend Map 2008 and this year when Information Architects released the beta version of Web Trend Map 2008 I found a Vietnamese stop: 24h.com.vn, a news site in the same line with Korean ones. The map is for fun only, however I should find out how Information Architects picked 24h and not others. It seems that they did not understand the web scene in Vietnam. It just became a lot easier to find custom Google Maps that users have created. A quick click of the "Show Search Options" and selecting User-created content will give you a list of custom maps created by Google's users along the left column of the page: People are documenting all kinds of crazy things. For example, a guy named Adam plotted his 2007 Taco Bell Road Trip around Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs: Do you see any fun custom maps near you? via Google Maps Mania Comment on

Author: ZUBAIR, AYODEJI OPEYEMI ABSTRACT This project examines the use of GIS and Remote Sensing in mapping Land Use Land Cover in Ilorin between 1972 and 2001 so as to detect the changes that has taken place in this status between these periods. Subsequently, an attempt was made at projecting the observed land use land cover in the next 14 years. In achieving this, Land Consumption Rate and Land Absorption Coefficient were introduced to aid in the quantitative assessment of the change. The

As the Google LatLong Blog reports, Google has added a new “show search options” link beside the main search box in Google Maps. This is a very interesting development for several reasons. It’s a pull-down menu that allows you to narrow or expand results for the same query and more easily discover non-traditional content in Google Maps. The new menu allows you to see: everything, locations, businesses and, significantly, user-created content. The rest of this post is at SEL.

So my question is, what sort of grand total triangle limit should I be aiming for. I realise this depends on the grunt of the PC running the game, but in today's t

1st: There are two interesting posts on the use of video by SMBs (small and medium sized businesses) as way to gain better visibility and higher rankings in organic search results. The 1st post is Greg Sterling here and the 2nd on the Kelsey Group blog here. I am sure this is good news for the likes of Spot Runner and Spotzer. 2nd: Google maps has launched directions without addresses functionality - this is cool and very useful… Even works in the UK. Lastly: While digging around on Google m

Last November, Lee Xian Jie claimed that they have made the world’s largest mind map in Singapore. They did a good job. Here I want to show you the largest mind map in China - or the (ex) largest mind map in the world It was made in Shanghai, China, November 2006, it’s been over one year since then, I think it’s still worthwhile to mention it again, since as far as I know no one has mentioned it in the English world - I should have done it, I didn’t have a English blog at that time though I

Tonight is the first (annual? monthly?) UMI Code Jam. Tim, Nino and Ted have been blazing for the past six hours and Rebecca and Ian have been there for moral support. If Umibot drank coffee, he’d be chugging it about now. We’re closing in on a full-color RESTful API and hope to (formally) announce it very soon…

This info is hidden in the colors. Colors are described by three numbers, our space is too. So in a color map one can have all the information about a shape. All shapes? No. The shapes described here are only shapes which can be obtained by transforming a sphere. No holes are allowed, so a teacup, with a handle is imp

Tuesday’s writing tip Experienced authors recognize that constant daily progress is the key to writing success. Daily progress is necessary so you can avoid writer’s block, finish your book on time, and have time left to promote and profit from your book. Writing as little as 30 or 45 minutes a day is often enough to keep your brain engaged and your project moving forward. Daily progress is easy when you work with a mind map that displays the work that remains to be done as well as your daily

First Look: MindManager 7, mind mapping app Posted on 2008 under Uncategorized | Comments are off 28 Jan Images are typically easier to remember than words because people think in pictures. When organizing thoughts, some use a traditional outlining method to arrange concepts using words. Mind mapping is a more efficient way to categorize the thought process, allowing the user to design a physical layout of their ideas with colors, locations, and pictu... « Previous Entries

Well You may not believe this but I have actually been mapping, I have been working on gms_atoll updated the spawn room, added 3d skybox which I am going to make bigger and also the biggest thing it is compiled in the ep2 engine. So the water should work on gmod unlike other gmod maps at the moment where when you go underwater you get this fucked up black flickering. There is one problem though I am getting a line with nothing in it between the 3d skybox and map so there is a gap in the water

The build-up of the Niner Air 9 was complete Friday afternoon. I picked it up at Blue Sky and Rob finished the bike fit. There are still some adjustments to be made (stem height, bar length) but the bike was ready to go by 6:00. The first official ride of the Mapping Project occurred late Saturday. The weather was warm for January, a bit windy but rideable. The trails at Rabbit Mountain were dry where they faced south and where they avoided the path of melting snow. The spur section was qui

Value Stream Mapping - Common Mistakes During many first time Value Stream Mapping exercises, we have noticed some common mistakes. Many times when the mistake is made, it is not recognized and the Value Stream Mapping tool is called into question. It’s like trying to use excel as a word processor, it kind of works but you just don’t quite get the results you were expecting. So here are some of our observations. 1. You start to follow the people doing the work. We all start out underst

There’s an interesting post at webmapper that’s probably worth reading, especially if you are a techy interested in real estate - Neighbo(u)rhood 2.0 The new services and products launched by Urban Mapping, Zillow, and the Dutch CBS in the first weeks of January may herald a new trend that affects online mapping: Neighbourhood 2.0. It does not only mark a shift from the global to the local, but also a further step in the democratisation of cartography: opening up neighbourhood data to both the

Clusterer klingt genau richtig für meine Surveillance Map die immer langsamer wird: This object is an add-on for the Google Maps API. It lets you handle large numbers of markers, thousands if you like, without the slow performance you’d get if you tried displaying them via the maps API directly. Clusterer uses two techniques to accomplish this: Only the markers currently visible actually get created. If too many markers would be visible, then they are grouped together into cluster markers.
