With all the talk of virtual worlds, and Second Life in particular, its easy to forget that there is a real world out there that also beckons attention beyond our monitors. Actually, it would be nice to marry both the virtual and real worlds together, because then you can really get some interesting things happening. This has not been lost (forgive the geo-pun) on the founders of Geocaching.com who have recently released a software platform called WheriGo (pronounced Where-i-Go) that enables on

The power of mind maps. Ever wondered how our mind segments thoughts in little pockets and somehow manages to form links and relationships with them in real time? Ever wondered how multi-dimensional relationships spark up and roll like a movie in our minds every time a thought is triggered. Plastic bag conquers Google Street View May 8th, 2008 Privacy advocates should take note of an effective way to avert the prying eyes of Google Street View: the lowly plastic bag. Google Street View foiled by a plastic bag. (Credit: Google) A block of College Road in Fairbanks, Alaska, along with portions of Minnie St. and Third St. show what a driver would see only if wearing a plastic bag on his or her head. As Google Sightseeing observes, you can tell what it is by the fact that

Frengo makes social networks leaky May 8th, 2008 Mobile app maker Frengo is now making apps for popular social networks (Facebook, Hi5, etc.) that allow connections between networks. The Flirtable app, for example, allows users on one social network to flirt with users on another. The Lolz app, likewise, lets users share LOLcat images (sadly, not very funny ones) across networks. Frengo is using OpenSocial as a standard for building the apps, but OpenSocial doesn’t address friend porta

Phone numbers give way to social networking profiles with RmbrMe May 8th, 2008 Entrepreneurs of all types have attempted to kill off the phone number in place of something simpler. We’ve seen tokens, special re-routing numbers, and even services that offer a number you can give someone that tells them you’re not interested. A new service called RmbrMe is of a different breed, choosing to use shortcode messaging to let you give out access to any or all of your social networking profiles with

Spammy Twitter accounts to get the virtual guillotine May 8th, 2008 There are very few rules on microblogging platform Twitter. But if you use it for unsolicited “tweets” about male enhancement products, watch out: Twitter has started to shut down accounts that it has flagged as “spam,” reported blogger Jesse Stay. Twitter employees confirmed the new tactic in their developer forum. “We’ve been considering this issue here at Twitter HQ, and we’re planning on simply removing the accounts of

Mapping start-up Socialight opens API May 7th, 2008 For something so focused on navigation and geography, it’s a bit ironic that location-based social networks have to work their way through such a jungle: carrier partnerships, handset compatibility, creepy privacy concerns, and what-have-you. But one small New York start-up, Socialight, says it’s found a route: developers, developers, developers. Socialight, which focuses on user-created city maps and whose founders insist that location-b

Enjoy this archive of our progress so far… To inherit the visual traditions of my ancestors and make them part of my consciousness my real self is in here someplace. That makes it awfully scary to unveil. Flirts with being seen as human. Hmmmm. Alright. The knights who say “Ni” made me do it. To get past the tree of self revelation.

Customer service via Twitter works for unpopular people too May 7th, 2008 Yesterday I was in Internet purgatory. Today I’m back in the land of the living. The occasion? Cable installation–an activity on par with going to get fillings at the dentist. It’s time consuming, and often a learning experience about the quirks of wherever you’re living. When my wonderful technician was done, I had play-off basketball and what I thought was a working pipe into the Web. However, I learned soon after

I love Goog 411. And I’ve lately been feeling like I “get” social networking, even though I struggle to incorporate it into daily life. I mean, if it’s a time crunch requiring a choice between exercising and Twittering or LinkedIn, I have to choose exercise. Now, just as I think I have a handle on enough web-based technologies so as to feel current, I have heard about some new ones that I don’t grasp! I want to fit them neatly into some sort of mental genre folder. Help! The scoop on Loopt. L

Microsoft: Saving face by buying Facebook? May 7th, 2008 Microsoft, we get it: That Yahoo thing fell through, and picking up the pieces can be messy. But according to Kara Swisher at All Things D, Redmond just won’t give up. The company has reportedly put together a Plan B that it refers to as “Project Granola,” a name that makes “Zune” sound good. And part of “Project Granola,” Swisher wrote, is exploring the possibility of turning that $240 million stake in Facebook into an outright owne

Study: Developer activity on Facebook’s platform is slowing May 7th, 2008 All gold rushes must come to an end, and according to one new report, Facebook’s developer platform is no exception. Facebook developer Jesse Farmer, creator of developer analytics service Adonomics, did an extensive amount of number-crunching after coming to an odd observation earlier this year: “Something is wrong in the Facebook developer community,” Farmer wrote in a blog post Tuesday. “Starting in March I began

We’ve been working with one of clients on marker performance. The problem with markers is they take a long time to load up especially when you add a lot of makers eg. over 100 markers. The performance gets worse when you add polygons or polylines to the map and as you add or remove layers to the map One of the problems is that the marker class is full of features - Info Windows, shadows, custom icons etc. The browser has to manage all of the DOM objects for the functionality.
