It's official. Britain last week put its name to an international commitment to make data produced by government bodies available for free use in the internet economy. This is the first formal statement that the government has come on board the Free Our Data campaign launched by Guardian Technology (and widely derided as impractical) more than two years ago. The commitment to make public sector information free, or charge no more than the marginal cost of maintaining and distributing the extr

This post started as a list of software that I kept sporadically up to date over several years over at my personal site. From then, I started to get feedback from users that found that page and we kept the page updated with the current best of breed software for various spatial analysis and computing tasks. Here's the current list for Linux servers: Operating System: Ubuntu server I had to go with Ubuntu on this one. The recommendation has changed over the years, but ultimately Ubuntu's pa

Just in time for the hiking holiday: Today I learned about a firmware update for the Nokia E90 mobile phone that adds AGPS (Assisted GPS) support. Assisted GPS also uses information from mobile phone networks. It reduces especially the time to determine the first position after switching on the GPS. The Firmware can be installed using the Nokia Software Updater which is part of the Nokia PC Suite. Unfortunately, the Software Updater is not yet compatible with Windows Vista.

Four weeks ago today, I was interviewed for a job at Starbucks. Today, I got the job. It's been a long time in the making... much longer than 4 weeks. Four years ago, I would estimate, is when I started thinking about working at Starbucks. Different location then. I picked up an application a couple of times... but never turned one in. Early this year was the first time I turned one in. Then I turned in a second application to the same store. Shortly afterwards, I got the interview. I went to

Sometimes we just need to use a gps system for a temporary time period. In such cases, renting rather than buying a gps device could be a good option. Keeping in mind of renting a gps navigation system is a good idea. Whenever you need it, just type “rent gps” on google and navigate On the other hand for UK users Zintech.co.uk offers an in-car Satellite Navigation hire service, covering the UK, Europe, The States, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Welcome to Spatial-OR! This site is a place where we can discuss OR techniques as they relate to spatial analysis and problem solving. I've met quite a few people who are interested in this niche area, so we'll see how many there are out there hopefully meet a few new colleagues along the way. I'm interested in what spatial and OR methods practitioners are using out there to solve real world problems. I'm also interested in connecting researchers and academics out there who are adding to the sta

Environmental Systems Research Institute, better known as ESRI, announced last week the release of ArcGIS version 9.3. This release of the desktop application appears to include quite a few significant enhancements over the current version, including for example: A new Convert Graphics to Features function that allows you to create features by drawing graphics without using the editor. The ability to export layers to KML (Google Earth) files is now built into ArcGIS Desktop 9.3. A new HTML p

*sigh* I can’t figure out what I’m more disappointed in, surveyors thinking they should be doing work GIS professionals should be doing or a magazine previewing articles to government agencies for them to censor them. Inconceivable! Update: It appears that the author withdrew the article, not the publisher. The idea that a state board would even worry about such things shows that obviously don’t have enough to do.

Does it make sense to conserve crop wild relatives in situ? That’s an extreme way of asking the question, I know, but maybe it is worth putting it as starkly as possible. To concentrate minds, let us say. Such musings were triggered (not for the first time) by the latest niche modelling study trying to predict what will happen to species distributions under climate change. As usual, it’s not good. Working on the California flora, researchers at Berkeley found “that two thirds of … ‘endemics’ c
