It's official. Britain last week put its name to an international commitment to make data produced by government bodies available for free use in the internet economy. This is the first formal statement that the government has come on board the Free Our Data campaign launched by Guardian Technology (and widely derided as impractical) more than two years ago. The commitment to make public sector information free, or charge no more than the marginal cost of maintaining and distributing the extr

Just in time for the hiking holiday: Today I learned about a firmware update for the Nokia E90 mobile phone that adds AGPS (Assisted GPS) support. Assisted GPS also uses information from mobile phone networks. It reduces especially the time to determine the first position after switching on the GPS. The Firmware can be installed using the Nokia Software Updater which is part of the Nokia PC Suite. Unfortunately, the Software Updater is not yet compatible with Windows Vista.

Inconceivable! Update: It appears that the author withdrew the article, not the publisher. The idea that a state board would even worry about such things shows that obviously don’t have enough to do.

Traditional view, at least in some quarters is that GIS begins where CAD ends! In a Geospatial context, CAD systems such as AutoCAD are mainly used in spatial data creation because they provide strong set of design and precision tools required for the digital data creation. GIS systems on the other hand are used to add ‘intelligence’ to the data by converting CAD data into GIS formats and adding additional information (attributes, projection information etc) to the spatial data. They are also

Ahhhh, Friday. The one day each week I get to spend catching up on everything that had to be put off during the previous four days. Because many people are on flexible work schedules (5/40’s, 9/80’s and the like), Fridays tend to be relatively quiet around here. There are typically fewer meetings, a smaller volume of phone calls, and less fires to put out (although not always) compared to Monday through Thursday. This creates the perfect climate for tending to past-due paper work, report revie

With Monday’s unveiling of Google’s Map Maker, Google account holders now have the ability to edit and add to certain Google Maps. The Map Maker currently only allows for map editing in a select group of countries including Cyprus, Iceland, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Caribbean nations. Functions of the tool include custom map creations, borders and regions, places of interest and road networks. ESRI released their downloadable application, ArcGIS Explorer 480, this week. The upgraded version s

This column is sponsored by ESRI It’s been interesting to see the varying vendor approaches to the geospatial marketplace, and to note distinct differences in how they package and market their products. There’s generally a constant corporate personality for a company, but the marketing messages and product approach can change considerably over time. There have been several [...]

I completed two more counties for the Isolated Wetlands project that I am working on. Once we had the basic methodology in place for our first county, Brunswick, we could apply it to Bladen and Columbus Counties. Here is a screenshot of Bladen County. Right now I am experimenting with reducing the noise of the resulting polygons by looking at the total area of each polygon. Seems like many of

Here’s a query I use to find find the closest X locations to a particular latitude and longitude. I usually end up combining it with a lot of other query business, but in this case I’ve tried to remove everything that isn’t related to the proximity query. Technology-wise, this was written to be used with Google Maps, mySQL (assuming you have that lat and lng stored), and a custom SQL query class. I use the query class to parameterize everything for security reasons, but it should be pretty

The geoblogosphere seems to be all a twitter (no relation to twitter) with the release of ArcGIS 9.3. I made the mistake of getting my knickers in a twist when 9.2 came out. I installed it wanting to try the new features, but unfortunately I used it to work on some project work when the rest of the office hadn't upgraded from 9.1 (or 9.0 in some cases). That was dumb on my part, so now if I

TOPOLOGY & LAYERS (THEMES) Topology refers to the spatial relationships between geographic features. It describes the relationships between connecting or adjacent coverage features. Topological relationships are built from simple elements into complex elements: points (simplest elements), arcs (sets of connected points), areas (sets of connected arcs), and routes (sets of sections, which are arcs or portions of arcs). Topology is useful in GIS because many spatial modeling operations

Continuation... "I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next." ~Gilda Radner 9. I uploaded 2 videos to YouTube today that was in response to question from a user of LIDAR Analyst. They describe how to set up visualization of the DEM and Bare-Earth DEM in ArcGIS. Instead of the default option of creating a RGB hill-shade raster this technique keeps the DEM and Hill-Shade rasters separate. There are two major reasons that I prefer this method (instead of the RGB raster): 1. You can customize the coloring. This allows you to choose a color ramp that brings out the details
