Never apologise for delayed posts… this is a Sunday Tip Day post, not a Thursday! Anyhow… I just found a super little cross-platform utility that takes shapefiles and dumps them to a variety of text-based formats. Download it here, and simply unzip it to use it. There isn’t much documentation, but basically your options are to download to gpx or spreadsheet. The following gives you a simple delimited text file with the coordinates and values from your attribute table: ./shp2text -–spreadshee

I've known about podcasts, and Internet Radio, for a long time. Podcasts remind me of the Video on Demand feature when I had cable. It's nice to be able to go back and catch a show at one's leisure, rather than stay glued to the transmissions or streams whenever they go out. I found quite a few podcasts for my esoteric music interests, Learning Company-type lectures, and geospatial information systems that interest me, besides the library-oriented sites. One of the hardest things to find these d

Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data (see definition at Wikipedia). The application fields of augmented reality for spatial problems are very broad. The contain navigation, enviromental planning, etc. Object recognition is here also an issue. Currently many GI researchers are dealing with the topic of augmented maps. Some interesting papers are for example: Augmented Maps Localisation and Interactio

Recently at a conference I was thumbing through the program pamphlet, searching for thought provoking presentations. I just about tossed it in the trash and walked out. There was only 1 topic different than other presentations I have seen in the last 13 years. What has happened to GIS being the new and exciting solution? Why do we still have presentations with the topic…”Data Aggregation: Combining sewer information across county and city lines”. Who cares? GIS is stuck in the year 1995, back wh
