Next week is the Where 2.0 conference in Burlingame, CA, and Freebase will be there. Freebase contributor Jonathan Lowe will be presenting some of his work on Freebase and geodata: To achieve the goal of cultivating a large base of users who repeatedly visit your site, your mashups must deliver useful, specific answers to a range of questions from a disparate audience. Mashups that rely on open, free, semantically structured data stores such as Metaweb’s Freebase enable the users themselves

Dave Bouwman has some thoughts on using PostgreSQL as a RDBMS for ArcSDE (or ArcGIS Server Enterprise as we should be calling it). Thus far I’ve simply come to realize that I have a lot to learn. I need to grok a lot more about Postgresql and PostGIS to start, and then add ArcSDE into the mix. While everyone is really excited about PostgreSQL support at 9.3, remember it won’t be as easy to administer as SQL Server is (at least to those who already use SQL Server). Just keep that in mind befor

Prof. Arno Scharl of the MODUL University Vienna has send me an interesting Information about a project called Knowledge Planet. Unfortunately I had only litte time to look at this project, but it deals with with Ontologies and Knowledge Bases. Ontologies and Knowlegde Bases are populare buzzwords many people in the GI industy uses for neary everything, but in my opinion less people understand how this could applied properly to build up applications. I think this is one of the few implementatio

Agricultural Aircraft Sometimes the solution to a problem is in one’s own backyard. For agricultural engineer Steven J. Thomson, readily available agricultural airplanes provided a solution to the need for high-resolution images as part of remote sensing techniques for the Mississippi Delta.

Untrue to typical loud form in the press, deCarta quietly raised $10.5M towards yet another round of $21M financing - this one on top of about $40M raised over the years from multiple rounds. It's unbelievable that the company can continue to convince investors to spend more money when deCarta's core geospatial primitives such as geocoding, mapping, and routing have been reduced to commodities care of Google and Microsoft, and when more mobile & GPS device manufacturers now have their own

The recent Myanmar disaster proves that visualizing data has found a new important place in mapping capabilities, links to data and pictures from Frank at Google Earth blog. All Points Blog points to CNN as an example of why static data just doesn’t cut it, especially when it comes to demographic information and election coverage. Sue at Very Spatial shows us IBM’s latest project called Many Eyes. Many Eyes is a set of visualization tools and web services that allow users to create and shar

PostGIS provider for FDO update May 9th, 2008 During last weeks, a lot of fresh bits have been contributed to the PostGIS provider for FDO Open Source. The great part of this work was committed by Bruno Scott and his colleagues. Bruno has recently joined the FDO development team. I’d like to express my deep gratitude to Bruno for his fantastic help in improving the PostGIS provider. The provider has got better shape and stability. Recently, I’ve failed my duties in the provider development,

Finally, I created the packages of GRASS 6.3.0 and GDAL 1.5.1 for Ubuntu Hardy Heron (currently amd64 only). There were some issues regarding the Debian patching system, which was new to me. Another problem is, that the new wx-digitiser does not work yet. But you can already test the new-generation WxPython-based GRASS GUI. Packages for i386 are comming soon, but if you can’t wait, you can just get the sources (apt-get source grass) and run dpkg-source -x grass-6.3.0-0.dsc cd grass-6.3.0 dp

I’ve asked the question on Twitter, but I’d like to get a more broad idea of what people think about developing applications inside a virtual environment. Results were pretty much on both extremes, either people love it, or people told me I need to get a new IT staff. We do have virtual servers running already, but the reality of actually developing inside a “virtual workstation” might be totally different. The upside of having different virtual environments available to me to use and not have
