Odrobina teorii Witam w kolejnym artykule z cyklu “Projektowanie geobazy ESRI”. Dziś postaram się podjąć temat podtypów (ang. subtypes). Do czego można użyć podtypu? Otóż, w systemach GIS występuje duża ilość różnych obiektów na mapie, które są ze sobą w różnych relacjach. Często zachodzi konieczność identyfikacji (np. z poziomu kodu aplikacji), z jakim obiektem mamy do czynienia. Proszę sobie wyobrazić listę obiektów w oknie aplikacji. A few months ago I became intrigued with the concept of obtaining aerial photography utilizing RC planes for GIS applications. After reading the RC forums and different websites I purchased an EasyStar RC plane. I bought the ready to fly (RTF) kit, a couple of Pentax cameras w/cracked LCDs (I was going to replace the cracked LCDs later), an IR switch to trigger the shutter and an alarm in case I lost radio contact with the plane. I also picked up a couple of RC simulators, FS One and FMS.

Hi, OGR2OGR is a great command line tool for GIS format conversions providing support for all the ‘mainstream’ formats as well as plenty of more obscure ones. It is also useful for changing the projection & coordinate system of a map layer. The syntax for this is : ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" original.shp wgs84.shp -s_srs EPSG:27700 -t_srs EPSG:4326 where in this case we are re-projecting ‘original.shp’ from OSGB36 British National Grid to Longitude / Lattitude WGS84 and called ‘wgs84.s

Today I tried Merkaartor, a mapping application built using Qt 4. Although it can fetch from openstreetmap and upload it again, the site states that it can not save anything to disk yet. Features I miss are satellite / aerial photo (like google maps) and layering. Sadly, the author said I cannot make any guarantees if I will improve on this. It started out as a test project to get acquainted with Qt4. I know Qt4 now. This is a good piece to anyone who wants to extend it.

Time to put GIS — the term — out to pasture May 29, 2008 – 12:00 pm A couple of years ago, if you were involved with mapping and map-relevant data, everything — vendor products, titles, industry events, etc. — fell under the umbrella of the GIS (Geographic Information System) term. In many organizations, the GIS f

We have made some updates to our Google Earth GIS: 1. The current projects list has been updated with our current projects, including the 2008 resurfacing project, and the 2008 Barrett Law sidewalk project. 2. We have added a layer in the Howard County folder called, "Howard County Plats". This layer includes geographic links to hundreds of plats throughout the county. As anybody who has known me for any length of time will know I did lots of martial arts in my youth and have dabbled in various forms of karate and jiu jutsu most of my life, something else I did was play guitar in a few punk pop bands in the early 90’s and while doing both of those I did lots and lots of practise. It takes practise to get closer to your potential in any skill. So why don’t we practise programming in the same way? Well lots of us do. Many professional programmers also code as

Why Geography and GIS Are Necessary for Carbon Trading An interesting article yesterday from The Guardian entitled ‘Billions wasted on UN climate programme‘ it is revealed that certain projects are gathering enormous carbon credits when they should not qualify. This is a reason why geographic information systems (GIS) and other geospatial technologies should be used under any carbon exchange scheme. Under the clean development mechanism [...]

Putting the ‘Geo’ into ‘Sustainable’ Sustainable is a nice word. I like it. But it needs to be more identifiable and stand for something. Lots of people have attempted to define it and label it. But where is the ‘geo’ in it? We all know it includes the environment and is connected to the idea of conserving [...]

The ESRI books below are actually useful books about the science and mathematics behind GIS analysis. I’d like to note that Elements of Cartography, may be a little dated since i
