Just as we are settling down with the transition to open source, it would seem that a lot of other people are at least considering their options along the same lines, for whatever reason. This thread on the osgeo_discuss list, started off as a question about the value of open source to individual’s careers, but rapidly morphed into a discussion about replacing the ESRI packages. This seems to have lead to a general consensus about the areas where the open source packages do well and do badly.

Ran into this interesting ArcObjects utility class yesterday. To convert records of an ITable to an inMemory DataTable, use ESRI.ArcGIS.Utility.Converter.ToDataSet. This works really well for data viewing. However this interface seems to be now depracated and replaced with ESRI.ArcGIS.ADF. The ToDataSet method is missing in the new interface. GRASS, QGIS and others are in the need of their own map printing tools for high quality output but these projects should not start from scratch. There is a wealth of underlying code already in Mapserver, Mapguide etc which could be re-used in the terms of their respective licenses and certainly of programming language compatibility. La versione pdf è disponibile a 14 sterline circa, mentre la versione cartacea costa tra le 30 e le 40 sterline circa a seconda del formato (hard cover o soft cover).
