One of the criticisms we received when we launched GeoCommons was the lack of metadata for the content we had collected. Since then we’ve been looking into what would be a reasonable approach to metadata for the GeoWeb. Die Swisstopo hat es endlich geschafft, auf ihrer Internetseite eine Liste der mittlerweile doch recht zahlreichen WebGIS-Anwendungen zu publizieren. Zwar ist es nur eine PDF-Liste, aber immerhin besser als gar nichts. Die Liste konzentriert sich auf WebGIS-Anwendungen, von Webdiensten (WMS oder WFS) ist aber noch nichts zu sehen.

Little Update. Below is a satellite image of the peevyhouse farm after the Garland Coal company came in and strip-mined it. The photo is a little on the technical side, so be warned. It’s been overlaid with GIS data from the regional planners office, and is a little overwhelming. Using ArcObjects - java, I received the following error message. Which then proceeded in killing the JVM. Ha-ha. Kind of overkill for not finding a file. I think the verbage is amusing. On that note, does anyone know if you can use relative paths when defining the bitmap path in a custom command? This is java, so if you have a .NET solution, doesn’t help. I love geo-information. I still work on GIS, every now and then (I’ve just finished a project to map damages in Venetian buildings together with Politecnico di Milano and others) and it’s so much fun. I recently upgraded to the 2007 version of office as part of *cheap* offer for students. The user interface has radically changed, and it is not an upgrade I would recommend. Excel 2007 no longer has support for DBF files - a common database format, and one which is still used by ESRI in their ArcGIS Geographic Information System (GIS). SVG (scalable vector graphics) is a recommendation of the W3C and used for rendering vector graphics.
